Ingrained behavior...

The interview I had today was at an Independent Living Center, they provide assistance to those with physical and mental disabilities. Help them to live independently, work, find housing, help out when they have been denied a job or whatever because of the disability, teach social skills, all sorts of stuff. They do awesome things there and the help that they provide to the community is wonderful. I was told before the interview that it was important that I be comfortable working around and with those with disabilities(about 80% of the people who work there are disabled in some way or other)...totally not an issue for me at all. Disabilities don't scare me, they certainly don't offend me, and I view those with disabilites the same as everyone else...probably because I was raised a bit different from most other people in that regard. My grandmother was an RN at a home for those with both mental and physical disabilities...and she loved to bring some of her patients home to get them out of there occasionally. I grew up being around those who are a bit 'different' from everyone else, and am quite comfortable in that environment.

When I got there to do the interview, I was led into a waiting area and after a few minutes the woman I was interviewing with came to get me, I noticed immediately she didn't have a right hand, and offered my left. She didn't have a left hand either. She smiled and grasped my hand in both of her wrists and shook. :D It wasn't a problem for me, doesn't make me uncomfortable at all...but after the interview I began to worry that it might have made her uncomfortable or offended her. At the end of the interview my dumbass does the same thing...again. Lol...sometimes I have zero brain and it's just ingrained in my head to do that in a professional setting.

After the interview she had the current recep/admin assistant walk me around and introduce me to everyone. Everyone seems great, nice, and I'm sure will be awesome to work with. We get to this one gentleman's office and I didn't notice that he was in a a wheelchair for a minute, then I was introduced to his service animal. She is a beautiful dog, I asked if I could pet her because she came up to me, he said I could and we made very fast friends, lol..in fact she wouldn't let me go for a while, lol. I then offer him my hand...and he just laughs and flops his hands at me and smiles...he has no muscle control in them. I didn't realize that at all. So I was afraid I offended him too.

But, all in all, I guess I didn't offended anyone, because I got a second interview! I'm pretty psyched, I would LOVE this job. So yeah...I did a good job with the interview, I rocked it hard....and my stupid ingrained professional behavior didn't hurt me any. So W00t!! Out of the people they interviewed, I am the ONLY one they are asking for a second. So Fucking Sweet!!

Hope I actually get the job, lol.

Wow, sounds great. I, too, grew up with "different" people. Half my family is "handicapped". Just bad luck, I guess. I have a sister that is paraplegic from polio, another that is mentally retarded, another that is psycophrenic, and I am likely the most sane of the batch, but..... Good luck!

The handicapped people I know always want to be treated no differently, so you probably did the right thing. She obviously has practiced shaking hands. Don't sweat it. She wasn't offended, or she would have said so. Good luck.

One of the things that people with some sort of disability ask is to be treated no differently than anyone else. You didn't care or in some cases even notice that those people had some sort of disability. That should make you a shoe in for the job. Just don't think about your behavior, be yourself and you should be working in no time. Good luck!

Trust me, Dirty, no offense was taken. I had the EXACT same thing happen with my interview at my current job. Only the guy had lost both arms at the elbow. He was so comfortable with himself that I was too and did the automatic thing and shook with him as well. We both chuckled about it and it was amazing the dexterity he had with his arms. I watched him type, write, place a phone call, ect. he used to be a rep on the phones. lol
