The Apartment Strikes Back

Aaaaaannnnnnddddd it's another round with Maintenance. In today's match we have The Apartment A/C Unit in one corner, and the Frustrated Tenant in the other. However this is no ordinary fight, this one involves Weekend Maintanence! Today's fight will be a battle of the wits and stamina... who can hold out longest against the others?

Ok seriously, this is what happened. I spent a nice morning lying in bed, writing an email, messing around on the computer, and finally I get hungry enough to be bothered to go into the kitchen to see what's to eat. I step into a (cold) puddle of water, look down at the cats' water bowl and see it's still full, so they couldn't have spilled this much water. I look up higher to see my countertop and stove top are pooled with water, and the cast iron skillet I had left out on the stove has about an inch of water in it, a lovely murky brown. I look higher up and see my cupboards are splashed with water drops. I follow the line of water to the ceiling, and see the A/C panel has decided to dump condensed water onto my kitchen surfaces. I start grabbing towels, went through 4 full sized towels before I got all the water cleaned up. Of course the ceiling continues to drip, so I lay down a couple tea towels to catch the water while I go get my phone.

Of course I have the maintenance number on speed dial, so I call, and when I got the recording I realized, Hey, it's Saturday! (And then I felt badly about sending a text to someone at 9:30 in the morning. Sorry! I hope I didn't wake you up!) I left a message with the emergency hotline number, spoke slowly and articulately so they'd be able to reach me.

This was over an hour ago and I haven't had a call or a knock on my door. I am rapidly going through towels (1 load in the washer already) and am struggling to be patient. I cancelled my lunch plans (which I had to reschedule from last night already anyway, so now I've missed twice!) so I can wait for Maint to show. I do have plans tonight that I can't change, and will be gone overnight so I hope that the Maintenance people show up before I have to leave. Otherwise it'll be a mess when I get home tomorrow afternoon.

I'm not entirely sure what I can/should do to alleviate the problem until someone comes to fix it. Should I turn off my A/C? (Keep in mind, this is Texas, hotter than a snake's ass in a wagon rut (Thank you Robin Williams for that line) and no A/C means almost certain death. Ok It means constant sweating and uncomfortable, stifling heat.) I already turned up the temp to 80. I actually like it warm, I'm always cold. But still, any hotter and it will be too hot. Should I be concerned that the maintance people won't come because I've bugged them so much about other crap? I will trust them to be professional. I imagine water damage leads to structural damage and that's something they aren't going to want.

I turned off the A/C and ran fans on high, put a container under the leak, and waited. Happily, the maintenance guy appeared shortly thereafter. :)

Ya you should turn your a/c off. Do you have any fans? If you don't, it's going to continue to leak. Ifyo keep it on, run to the store real quick and get a mop bucket or something if you don't have one already, if you do, put it under the leak. That'll save your towels. Can you get at the a/c unit yourself? YOu could maybe patch the leak yourself temporarily while the maint people pretend they didn't get your call. YOu could turn it off, dry it then duct tape it. then trun it on. That might work, depends on why/how it's leaking.
