iPhone went swimming

I'm such a tard. I went simming with my iPhone today. The maintenance men at my apartments are CREEPY and I have seen them ogling women at the pool. Matt and I decided it'd be safer that I have my phone with me when I go out there alone, so today I took it. I'm carrying my towel, a book, a drink and my keys, so I slipped my phone into the top of my swimsuit. The water looked so good that instead of laying down and reading a bit first as I normally do, I just dove in. I swam around for 15 minutes or so then decided it was time to read. I get out of the pool and something suspicious catches my eye: a rather phone-shaped object on the pool floor. I dove down immediately and pulled it up, and was elated when I saw the little apple symbol wink on. Then it disappeared and I never saw it again.

I abandoned the pool and jogged home, opened the case and used my hair dryer on it, then got on youtube and looked up solutions for fixing. I opted not to prise it open and mess with things I don't know about, so I took path #2: dumped it in my jar of rice. I then looked up the nearest cell phone repair place, got dressed, grabbed my pot of rice and phone and raced to the store. When I got there I was on the verge of tears (I am married to my phone) and he said it would probably be fine. I have pics from China and Key West I haven't backed up yet (all you people who are going to make a comment on always backing things up can knob off) and of course all the phone numbers of work colleagues, friends, family, etc. I am so screwed if everything is lost.

Anyway, the guy says "I'll call you when it's ready." I stared at him a moment, waiting for him to say just kidding. Then he raised his eyebrows inquiringly and then I said "that's my phone you're holding so I'm not likely to answer if you call it." We laughed a minute and then he said just come back at 4:30. On the way home I actually cried. I feel like such a baby but OMG my life is in that phone. You would think this would be a great time to reassess my commitment to technology and think of ways to simplify, but really all I'm contemplating is whether I need the iPhone4 or go back to the 3GS if I have to replace it. Mostly I'm just concerned I'll lose the pix. I can get numbers later, and frankly can weed out those whom I never call. I have a ton fo games on there, so it'll suck to lose my progress. I'm acting as though my phone has already died but maybe I should wait to mourn until 4:31.

Today isn't going as I had planned, although I really did have rather a nice swim. I guess I'll go make breakfast now or something.

I once had a tiny zoolander type flip phone. Years ago on a client site, I bent over a desk, and it fell out of my shirt pocket and was submerged in a cup of coffee. I got it out, and it didn't work. When I got back to the hotel, I opened it up and just laid it on top of the heater. By the next morning, it still wasn't working, so I left it on the heater. When I got back to the hotel and tried it, it was working fine. If it were just water, I'd think your chances would be okay, however, with chlorinated water, I'm not sure. In any event, good luck! If it is rescued, perhaps look at the Otter Case (not the stylish one, but the full on containment unit) - it seems like it would survive a dunk in a pool.

My son threw my new switched on 3DS complete with Zelda in a sink full of water yesterday. It still works. Do you not have everything backed up from your phone every time you synch it? I hate it when the phone makes you do it but maybe its kinda useful.

Yeah I don't ever sync or back up. I may consider doing that now.

Take this opportunity to get yourself an external HD and back up all the shit on your computer to it.
