Something you don't see every day

There was an airshow my wife and I went to this past Saturday. I like seeing some rare or unusual aircraft that people own and here's one you probably haven't seen too often. It's a Fairchild PT-19 pilot training airplane built in 1943. It was used as a basic flight school trainer before pilots went on to train on the specific aircraft they would eventually fly. The Fairchild was designed to fly more like a combat plane with a low mount wing as opposed to the high mount wing.

This aircraft was in excellent condition and the pilot was offering rides. Unfortunantly, I couldn't afford to take a flight that day. I like seeing the old doped canvas/ wood/ open cockpit planes still buzzing around.

Yeah I agree, old planes flying around is a pretty neat thing to catch a glimpse of. In my area there is(apparently one of the very few still left in flying condition) a P-51 Mustang. One of the guys I know volunteers his time working on it. It is quite expensive to keep up and they survive on donations and by selling rides. Rides are seriously expensive, right around $1000( you get a video tape of yourself and various angles in the plane). Whats cool is that when they take it to airshows the pilot has one of the volunteers come with him to the show to help prep the plane for rides and such and that person gets to fly with the pilot down to the airshow and back again. Sweet deal huh?

That's a great deal. This guy had his son helping him with the airplane. He has put a lot of time and money in keeping it up and if i had a $100 to spare, I would have liked to have gone up for the short flight just to see how it handled. The P51 is one of my top ten favorites. It's sad to see these old warhorses fading away.
