Shared on Mon, 11/02/2009 - 00:59I have one class between me and the real world which I am remiss to join. That class is French 102, yes French, not Spanish, not Mandarin, or Russian. People don't often reallize that France and America love eachother, they immitate eachother in fashion and film and other pop culture. The film Breathless (1960) by Jean Luc-Godard was born out of his love of American Cinema, it was seeing this film that helped this thesis along in my own head.
The French Revolution (1789) and the American Revolution (1775) both happened in roughly the same time in history, and both countries have remained world powers since WW II. Arguements that suggest that America was a more integral part of winning the war fail to appreciate that France has the unfortunate home next to the big bad wolf. I think if our places on the map were reversed it would have been very different in that it would have been the same, only with them coming to the rescue. America was the World Hegemon (that is to say America was the World leader in economy, military, and culture), while France was not. But, France helped birth the European Steel and Coal Community which ultimately turned into the European U nion. The European U nion is more appropriate to compete with the United States in size, but they also carry some dead weight countries this could be for good will or good swill purposes. Currently China is taking a firmer and firmer grip on the World's economy (the fact the Olympics were just held in Beijing was no accident, they are trying to become culturally relevant.) China's "police force" can also be turned into a military that can rival the U.S. military dollar for dollar and of course they have many more warm bodies. Ok I'm sidetracking a bit, but this is stuff you should know.
The fact Americans laugh at the French, and the French turn their noses up in the exact same fashion seems to be two cool kids making a name for the other. The two counties are divas in cahoots. No one knows this, we two countries are a perpetual culture producing machine.
I also chose this language because a good friend of mine is in France for the next year, and I would like as few barriers inbetween visting him and not visiting him if I get the chance. Through him I have met four groups of people from France and I liked them all. Incredibally similar us and them.
Knowledge like fairy dust, snort that shit.
If this sounds crazy, then I beseech you, please respond with your remedy to fix the muts and the frogs.
