Ladies and/or gay dudes.... help!

I have two problems.

1. I'm a cheap a-hole. There is a mom-and-pop suit shop in town that sells very nice italian suits for a great price. They're not making much money on the suits, so they charge $50 to $60 for a really basic shirt, and anywhere from $40-$80 for a tie. Naturally being the cheap a-hole I am, I buy the suit there and go elsewhere for my shirts and ties.

2. I have no fashion sense whatsoever. Zero. Nuthin'. Most of the suit ensembles I put together are heavily based on recommendations from the wife or coworkers, or I'll even ask the guys in the suit shop what would look good with the suit I'm purchasing (but of course, I won't buy the shirt and tie there).

But today I fucked up. I picked up my suit in a rush, got home and started piecing things together. I have to give a short presentation tomorrow in front of a crowd of about 50 medical staff professionals (mostly women in their 40's and 50's) and I'd prefer not to look like a dick who can't dress himself (which is only half true. I'm a cheap dick who can't dress himself).

So here's what I got so far. My cell phone camera isn't perfect but the suit is a tan/khaki color and the shirt is a very light ecru (off-white). I know the shirt works well with the suit but what about the tie?

If this works I'll be wicked fucking proud of myself for figuring it out. If not, I have a small armory of other ties...... suggestions please?

I'd try another tie...Sorry. That one looks a little...70's history professor. (You asked!) And - the most important part of a suit looking good is the fit. And most men buy their suits too big. Just keep that in mind as well.

That is one ugly tie. You know, you can't go wrong with a gray suit with a white shirt. And most color ties will go with it.

lol I resemble that remark. I am a fashion nightmare. Although I think that you'll be fine with whichever tie you choose. You're speaking to doctors not the cast of "Queer eye for the straight guy".

The tie is passable. Button down collars are not.

I would go with something with a bit more color in it. Add some yellow or a stripe of red to stand out against the somber grey.

Nothing new here.... mostly echoing sentiments already expressed: try a yellow-based tie. If another shirt is available, nix the button down collar. Go with typical brown shoes, preferably wing tips, and a brown belt. Get the suit altered to come as close to a good fit as possible. If you have a white pocket square or handkerchief, fold one into the jacket pocket.
