Shared on Thu, 01/10/2008 - 11:04So I purchased a used hdmi 360 kit on ebay last week for 25 bucks with shipping. I wanted to see if I could get a little more sharpenss out of my man cave rig, and while taling with Tank and others, they said using the hdmi would/could help, even if my Olevia is only 720p max res.
So my little purchase shows up yesterday, I get all giddy like a school girl (or our friend Phreak "the Cougar of XBL" when she gets to talk to 17 yr olds online) and start tearing down my rig and set up up the new hdmi hawtness....five minutes later I am all set up, grab the remote, flip through the different inputs, and Blam!!! HDMI hawtness here I com......Invalid format is showing up in the left hand corner of my screen....WTF is that...You piece of crap machine....how the hell is this an invalid format? Using hdmi cable check, tv supports native 720p (and upscales to 1080i if I want it to) check...what the hell is going on?!?!?!?!
So I disconnect and reconnect everything twice, same message, I reconnect my component cable, go to the dashboard, switch video output to 1080i from 720p just to see if that might work...nothing...So now the rage is starting to set in....did I get screwed on my purchase? Is my tv broken? Is my hdmi port on my 360 bad? WTF...
Next step, hop on the interwebs and go to Olevia's site and check for a FAQ or TECH help...Nada...nothing....zip.....zero....Ok...time to troll the interwebs....I type in Invalid format, Olevia....Blam......page after page after page of forum posts on this problem...Fuq...they are all saying the same thing...common problem....no help from xbox or Olevia....even one douchehole suggested some crazy ass fix of using both the vga cord and hdmi at the same time, then pulling the vga cord and then the hdmi cord will work...Are you freaking serious, wtf kind of solution is that...
Then someone said, you might want to check the firmware and see if you can upgrade to the current firmware version from Olevia...Really...my tv has firmware that can be upgraded...Holy crap....something else I got to worry about...
So I remember there is a usb port on the back of my tv, check it out and it says usb port/firware upgrade...Ok back to Olevia I go...
Find the firmware section, read the really easy how to do section (no sarcasm, it was really easy, just need a thumbdrive and format it to Fat32, they even tell you how to do that) download the most recent firmware, after I supply the FM number on the back of my tv. Turn the TV off, stick in the thumbdrive, turn the tv off and boo ya...it starts to update the firmware..
About 3 minutes later, tv turns back on, I pull the thumb drive, turn tv offf, set everything back up...flip to the hdmi input and after about a half second....HHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! HAWT PICTURE GOODNESS!!!
HOLY CRAP I did it, and I did not screw anything up!!!
Now please do not think I am totally brain dead when it comes to electronics (I am braindead about many things, but not the AV stuff) I have a decent amount of knowledge on how to set up audio/video equipment (I even read Home theater for dummies!!!). But when it comes to picking the right firmware, or messing around in a computer registry, I get super cautious, cause one little slip and boom your screwed (Deliverance Style).
So now I am all HDMI guy now for my 360. And Tank and the other tech guys were right (Thanks by the way) my picture is sharper and brighter. COD looks even better, and I cannot wait to check out the H3 with my new hook up..
I just wanted to share my little adventure and post this so other Olevia 232v owners can do this easy fix for the Invalid Format error.
