Awesome router.  Now, this isn't a router for the every day person.  It has a unique feature that is comes with dd-wrt built in from factory.  DD-WRT is a linux based firmware that you can put on routers that has cool features.  However, it starts as a barebones linux server so you need to know linux in order to use it.  This is why I am surprised a company decided to make it the firmware of choice.  However, they put their own web interface on top of it that allows easy access to some really cool features.

Let's start with the router has a USB 2.0 port.  It can be used cto create a NAS (network storage).  As long as the drives are formatted FAT or XFS it will automatically share the drive on the network as macaddressdiskX_ptY where macaddress is the mac of the router, X and Y of the disk and partition numbers.

Since it supports NAS it has a bittorrent client built in.  You can upload a .torrent and it will download to one of the shares.

Is have a sleep schedule.  You can tell it to go to sleep at scheduled times, say when you are at work.  Saves on electricity.

Another really cool feature is it supports multiple SSIDs each with their own security.  Why is that cool?  Do you own a DS?  DS only supports WEP security.  WEP can be hacked in 5 minutes.  So what you can do with this router is create a seperate SSID with a WEP password that is seperate from the rest of your network.

Looks like the blog editor doesn't like back slashes so I will use forward slashes: //macaddress/diskX_ptY

Multiple SSID's with different security profiles is bad ass ! I have that problem now i have one device, my DVR that relies on WEP making my entire network stuck with the lowest quality encryption and 2.xghz signal. Although I guess i have other devices also that only support 2ghz not 5ghz but still, at least i could upgrade my security.

So you can stick any external USB HD on it and use it as a NAS? That's awesome.

Nice, that does look sweet. I didn't see it mentioned, does it have gb wired? I also assume it's N spec? I'm in the mood for a new router and have good things about Buffalo. Sorry for being lazy! :)

Lala, I have a 1tb, 200gb, and 40b drive with a total of 5 partitions hooked up to it. It doesn't see my ntfs or hfs+ partitions of course. I have to figure out how to backup my 1tb drive so I can format it as tfs then I can start moving everything else around

Biz, of course. I've been wanting an N router with a usb port that is supported by DD-WRT or OpenWRT. I am sure I can get a print driver working on it also since it is linux.

Tank, you can do that with any openwrt or dd-wrt router. You just have to know how to set it up and how to use vi at the command line. I hate vi.

ya vi sucks. I have the DGL4500, it'll do the NAS thing too but having double ssids would rock. I'll have to submitt hat to dlink as a feature request until i'm in the market for a new router

Another power saving feature I found is it can put he hard drives to sleep when not in use. Granted that means the first time you use the network share in a while it is slow.
