Do you buy used games? Are you pissed off at more and more games require an activation code? Most of these games you can purchase an activation code for $10-$15 - but that negates the savings from buying used. So, what do I do to deal with this?
One, I don't buy EA games unless I absolutely need to play it. They just gave me a good reason to not get Madden or NHL every year. However, I also use the Goozex trading website.
First, what is Goozex? It is an online movie and game trading website. Games are given a point value from 100 to 1000 (above 1000 for special editions). 100 points is equivilant to $5 as you can buy 100 points for $5. The cool thing aobut Goozex is the game value doesn't depreciate as fast as, say, Gamestop. A game can stay at the 1000 point mark for several months. In fact, some games can go up in point value. The value is base don popularity and supply. So let's go through an example. Let's say I want Dead Island. I will first have to add it to my "want" list. I am then put into a queue. The site is first come first server. Which means for new games you tend to have long queues. This service isn't good if you want a new popular game quickly. If you don't mind waiting several months it is great. When you add the game to the queue you can specify the condtion form three choices - full game with disc, manual, and case; disc with manual; or just disc. This just represents the lowest condition you are willing to get. I am happy with disc and manual - but I can get a full game.
Now let's say it is your turn in the queue to receive the game. You have to satisfy two conditions to be able to trade. First is have enough points for the game. Second, you need a trade token. Tokens are roughly $2 each - this is where Goozex makes money along with their subscription service that allows you add games to your queue before they are released. Think of the token as a service fee for using the service. You will be sent an email and given 3 days to respond. Once you accepted the trade the seller will be notified. The seller can accept or deny the trade (if he doesn't like your rating) - much like eBay. Seller pays shipping. I'll explain the seller side in a bit. You have 12 days to report feedback otherwise the system will automatically give good feedback. If there are any disputes the Goozex support is pretty decent though a little slow. The buyer can put in a tracking number when he indicates that he sent it. When you receive the game leave good feedback.
As a seller you don't need tokens. You just have to put the game up for trade. Like buyer, it is first come first serve, so games that aren't popular don't move quickly. Make sure you take pics of the game and mailing labels. Goozex allows you to buy USPS mailing labels ready to print. I bought a bunch of padded mailers on ebay for roughly $0.50 en envelope. For me USPS shipping cost is around $3.00-$3.50 to most places. So $4 cost for buyer.
I have only bought 5 tokens since I have been using this (about 3 years I think). If there is a game I absolutely must get when it comes out I don't use this service. However, when I am done with those games they go onto this service. Those are usualy the games that hold their values - so I have yet to directly purchase any points. So the only money I have into the system are the costs of new games that I got bored with, shipping when I am the seller, and those 5 tokens. I just received MLB The Show and GT5 - to give you a reference on how long some games take if you put your name on the queue the day they come out.
Since the cost of getting these used games isn't that much adding on that $10 to $15 activation fee isn't that bad then. So, if you would like to join Goozex let me know. If I refer someone I get tokens and points I think. When you wign up I think they give you some tokens and points for becoming a new mmember.
