LAN at vegas?

I normally don't blog mor ethan once but I've heard this idea come up quite often lately.  Is it a good idea?  It depends on your goals.

Calling it a lan party assumes there will be video game playing.  Honestly, if you go to vegas would you play video games?  I wouldn't.  I would check out the shows like blue man group or Penn & Teller.  I would play some poker or craps.  I would check out the Stratosphere.  There's just so much stufff to do why would I play video games?  So if we were to have a lan party in Vegas I wouldn't call it a lan party - just a party.

Chitown or Indy makes sense.  Why would people go to those cities?  Everyone I know that has gone to those cities went because of either family or business.  Or the Indy 500.  There wouldn't be the distractions of other activities taking away from the lan.

So, it depends on your goals.  Do you want to play games or just get together.  Some people are happy with just getting together because they can play games with the other people over the internet.  However, the lan environment is completely different and some people love that.

I guess it comes down to whether or not the site members have the discipline / interest to hang with people from the site or not. If they don't, why go to a LAN in the first place?

I think vegas is perfect. Plane ticket is cheaper, hotels are cheaper. And I believe hosting a LAN there would be easier.

I never went to the Chi lan because chicago is too fucking expensive to fly into. I don't know why that's the case but it is. Vegas tickets are subsidized by Vegasor Nevada or someone, but they're dirt cheap. Hotels cost about as much. It's not as expensive from a hotel/flight standpoint but there are many more ways for it to become much more expensive than a chilan too ifyou care to indulge. I think the gaming needs to be there but i'm sure there will be many distractions.

Hmmm... what about just calling it 2o2p party and forgetting the gaming aspect of it? It will be much easier to get spouses to go.

I've been to the last 2 LANs and really enjoyed both. I just don't think a Vegas LAN would work as well. I go to the LAN to both game and party. Vegas would provide too many distractions. This would detract from the whole purpose of a LAN and that is to get to meet members from this site. I also think Clan LANs would fail for most clans here as well. Most clans aren't active or large enough to do it. Anyway, I know I won't be going to Vegas with 2o2p. My wife would have my head, and it's probably a vacation that I would do just with her. I'm hoping people change their minds on this thinking. I know NoGame and Fire have been working on pricing out an Indy LAN. Maybe that might work. But for me, Vegas does not.

The closest I get to video games in Vegas is video poker while mooching comp drinks.

I know it is cheaper to fly to Vegas. That's not my point. Would you really play video games in Vegas. This is Vegas we are talking about. Clan LANS work, there are several of them on site. You don't need a bunch, just people willing to get together.

Also, I think a clan LAN should be somewhere where someone is familiar with the city if not in Vegas. I think Minneapolis would work well for a small group. Could play games during the day on Saturday, hit Acme Comedy Club or Comedy Sportz in the evening.
