Everytime this movie is on TV I have to watch.  It's so awesome, especially considering it was made in 1970.  A movie like that would be made completely in CG today.  I don't think CG could make the movie look any better.  I wonder how they made that movie.  Did they sacrifice many warbirds to make it?  Did they make replicas?

It was just on AMC. Now they are showing Patton.

Patton is ok. I don't like the way they handled him slapping around that shell shocked soldier though. Made Patton look too good.

They took AT-6 Texan trainers (which were plentiful in 1970) and changed the canopy to make Zeroes and Japanese planes. The pilots of the vintage American fighters had to fly very slowly and had difficulty keeping the real fighters from stalling while shooting with the replicas. Other good movies filmed with real planes are 'The Battle of Britain" and 633 Squadron. Hard to believe it's been longer since these movies came out than it was from the end of WWII to the date they were filmed. Battle of Britain found a bunch of ME109's in Spain that they used.
