Life before YouTube

Just had a thought today after one of my friends emailed me a YouTube video. Made me realize that YouTube has become ubiquitous in our society. You don't think about it being there. How it works, who is behind it. It is just there. Like telephones, and cable and running water and mcdonalds and speed traps.

What did we do before YouTube? Hmmm... I would hazard a guess that we had a lot more of the following before YouTube

- chain emails of Jokes, pictures,... _____________ (fill in the blank)

- people saying "you had to be there dude!"

- people watching prime time tv.

- people wishing that they could have a way of showing the world this "cool" thing they just saw

What will be the long term affect be of a YouTube society? Does more openness to the goings-on in people's private lives actually make us more open? Is the new generation that is being brought up (the one that has NEVER seen an actual LP record - you know, the big black vinyl ones!) more open with themselves and ok with just being totall layed to the bone in terms of nothing ever being hidden? Does being totally open lead to socialism or true utopia? Not sure. But it is definitely food for thought.

Just my thought for the day.

I fear we are the last generation to know how to use the dictionary or the phone book to look things up.
