I'm Not Making This S**t Up!

So, we got flooded on Thursday afternoon. We had a letter through the door earlier in the week from Scottish Water, advising us that there would be an outage during the day due to them replacing a water main and installing a new one. I made sure all of the taps were turned off in the house early on in the morning and sat down with World of Warcraft to get Mhorag, my Draenei Warrior, to level 70.

Switch to around 2.30 in the afternoon, I wander downstairs to get something to drink and find that the kitchen, living room and the hallway are all covered in about an inch of water. There was no water running out of the taps, but judging by the look of the sink and the worktops, water had came up out of the plughole, filled up the sink, then started pouring out onto the floor. God only knows how long it was coming out, or how fast, for it to cover the floor so badly. I also have no idea how I didn't hear anything - I guess I had the volume on the PC turned up too loud - I feel like a f**king tool, like the whole thing is my fault.

After some panicking, and timely help from our neighbour, we managed to get the water mopped up and the floor dried out, but we'll have to get the laminate flooring replaced as it's started to warp, and the carpet in our hall and stairs will have to be replaced as it was completely sodden. Our insurance company is sending someone out on Wednesday to life the flooring and carpets, and install some drying and dehumidifying gear in the house to dry out the concrete flooring.

It's official - we feel like the unluckiest people in Scotland right now. I'm heading off to dye my hair black, listen to the Cure and write bad poetry in a black leather notebook.

Don't worry Devon, no emo-stylings over here. I've dyed my hair black once already in the past, and I think that's enough for anyone, to be honest. I know that there's not much I could have done if I had noticed it, but at least I could have done *something* - even if I had managed to stop some of the water, at least we wouldn't have as much damage as we do now.

Noooo, you can't go Emooooo. Actually, how is this your fault? True, it may have helped if you knew it was happening, but do you think you could have kept pace with the flow of water and saved the flooring?
