My idea for an MMO

I always thought that Feudal Japan would be a near-perfect setting for an MMO.

Set in or around the Sengoku Jidai or Warring States Period – the age when all of Japan was pretty much riven my constant conflict – there'd be plenty of scope for combat in there. During this time, Japan was pretty much split into two factions; East and West. Both were vying for dominance, and the ability to declare one Daimyo, or Lord as Shogun, the de facto ruler of Japan.

Various classes can be extrapolated from the setting – Samurai being the most obvious. Even within Samurai though, there would be scope for player development and/or specialisation. Samurai could choose to focus on Archery, Swordsmanship, Horseback combat, etc.

Depending on the period in history, and your reading of the laws, Samurai were forbidden to earn money or engage in anything as lowly as hard work. That leaves the door open for artisan and crafting classes, filling the gap which Samurai would be unable to fill.

Dependingo n how far you wanted tot ake things, the game could encompass mythological or legendary people, techniques and creatures. For example, there were various 'warrior monk' sects within Japan during this period, some more successful than others. They could be included in the game as an unarmed combat specialist, perhaps forming part of a 'neutral' faction, loyal only to their own beliefs. Various Kami (spirits) and some of the creatures from Japanese myths and folklore could be worked in to the game to provide a fantastical feel to it.

I can't see it happening, as the game I imagine is probably far too large in scope to work, and if I'm perfectly honest, is probably too narrow in appeal to hit a wide audience.

I don't care, I still think it'd be awesome.
