9/11 Remembered

This is a poem I wrote on 9/12/01 - pardon the writing style, it's not very poetic.  But that's where I was - just harsh and flow of observation:

Twin Tragedy
by Tait Lifto - September 12, 2001

I cry as I desperately try to piece back together my innocence
I cannot stare at my computer screen without seeing a plane
It disappeared and exploded into my heart
Bringing down my world, shattering my dreams
Safety – gone. Tears continue to flow.

When did evil take charge and cause such havoc?
The lives of millions affected in mere seconds
I can’t see an end to this bottomless pit
Even retribution seems hollow
It can never replace those lives

Firemen desperately trying to save victims
Becoming victims themselves in collapse
Dark and empty New York skyline
An empty reminder of the twins
Gone incredulously live on TV

Yes – we come together in time of crisis
Yes – we rush to go give blood
Yes – we desperately search for survivors
But who repairs our hearts?
Who can explain this and make it go away?
What do we tell our kids?

The silence of the skies above me is deafening
No roar of airplane engines today
A very grim reminder – this silence
An open tomb from where terror and fear came
Death driven from the sky by fanatics

Why? – I can’t fathom. I can’t heal.
Not right now – I just hurt
I hurt in places I’ve never felt
My soul cries out
I cry.

Well written tait, well writen. I'll have to read it again at home, since it moves me a little too much here at work.
