The movie quality difference is stunning. My personal recommendation is to grab a hd dvd player, and then just rent HD-DVDs! Yup, rent them
I use Netflix (I used to use Blockbuster Online, but they didn't rent HD-DVDs) and they have a cool option where you can set your preferences to prefer HD-DVDs for movies in your queue. Whenever an item comes up in your queue that is available on HD-DVD, you get it in that format instead of just standard definition dvd.
I know someone will argue that with the format war, it's pointless to get involved in something like this. But, an hd dvd player isn't that expensive for the quality you get in return. Think about it from an entertainment perspective. Even if HD-DVD goes away in a year, all the movies made up to that point in HD-DVD format would be playable on your hd dvd player, and the quality is amazing. Let me tell you, the difference in watching Shrek 3 on my hd dvd player versus watching it in standard def was worth an extra few bucks alone. Wize has a bunch of players with reviews available at http://wize.com/dvd-players/DVD+Type!HD-DVD*776 - I'm telling you, it's worth it!
480p versus 1080p? No Contest!!!!!!
