- * Period Shortcut
- * Address Bar Shortcuts
- * Bare Bones Google (great for EDGE)
Period Shortcut - unless you are in the web keyboard mode, the period key is on the second screen. You have to hit the key to go to the next screen, then a period, then a key to return to the letters screen which, all-told, is a 3 stroke process. However, there is a shortcut to the period key. Simply place your finger on the key to switch keyboards, then - without lifting your finger - slide to the period key, then release. A period will be entered and the keyboard will automatically return to letters!
Address Bar Shortcuts - Insta-Scroll to the top: you can jump right to the address bar no matter where you are scrolled to on a web page by just tapping the very top of the screen (the status bar). Type the address: no reason to use the "X" button to clear out the URL when you are typing in a new web address. Just start typing! Safari knows you are typing a new address and will automatically delete the previous entry. Skip "www" and ".com": Safari knows you meant "www". It also knows you want ".com". Don't waste time typing it - if you want to go to CNN.com, just type CNN in the address bar and Safari will take care of the rest.
Bare Bones Google - when using the EDGE network, speed can matter. Safari doesn't pass on mobile information to websites like IE mobile, so many mobile sites don't even function on the iPhone - you gotta use the bigger version. While this is typically desired, it can be horribly slow on EDGE and sometimes unusable with the limitations of the mobile Safari browser. Try using Google's mobile web that actually strips some parts of the net off to speed up web page loading on slow networks: http://google.com/gwt/n.
