I had the unique opportunity to meet Kinky Friedman, recent political candidate in the great state of Texas, at a cigar event at Two Brothers in Plano, TX. Unfortunately, while there was a photographer there and promises of a photo log detailing the event on the Two Brothers website (which is what I was waiting for before writing it up so I had the pictures to support the story), that never came to fruition, so the best I have is a website description and a scanned in copy of the menu from the evening.
This was my first visit to Two Brothers Cigar in Plano (twobrotherscigar.com) and it was an interesting one, from the décor (this used to be a pawn shop!) to the regulars (people of all shapes and sizes on a first name basis with each other – yes, the mullet lives on here), to the event food (catered by shops local to the historic downtown of Plano), to the beer (a rep from Kegs and Barrels on hand with a very unique selection of world beers), to the cigars.
The basics were, if you purchased $50 or more of Kinky cigars, you got access into the inner room (VIP area) overflowing with the aforementioned food and beer, plus very comfortable couches on which to smoke your cigar. Local food magicians supplied sustenance in fantastic fashion from wonderful Irish Stew (by Chef Kirk Mexia of Fillmore Pub), to Austrian-Hungarian Goulash (by Chef Jorg Fercher of Jorg’s Café Vienna) to my personal favorite, the Homemade Sausage in Barbeque Glaze (by Hometown Butcher Jeff Sparks of Ye Olde Butcher Shop) which should’ve had a nice asterisk to explain the potential for death by fire through very spicy ingredients.
But, the highlight was getting to meet the former Texas Governor candidate, Kinky Friedman. He was pleasant and low key – and, I swear, he just reminded me of The Duke. Just real genuine, solid, a man’s man, and cool wearing his trademark cowboy hat and flashing the occasional smile. All in all, a great evening.
