Amazing the Difference a Bezel Makes.

In my previous entry, I tried to catch everyone up to speed on where my little MAME Odyssey was in the course of production.  The last pic showed obvious progress, but the glaring TV in the middle of the cab is a tough thing to see through on the way to a final product.

The TV REALLY needs to be hidden to make this setup look even CLOSE to authentic.  There are lots of different methods people have employed in the Build Your Own Arcade realm.  Foamcore board, poster board, painted cardboard, smoked plexiglass/glass, even plastic bezels from arcade suppliers such as Happ.  I've found a solution I like in the way of masked and painted plexiglass.

I apologize for the crappy cell phone pic.  But by cutting the laminate already on the plexiglass as purchased to the size of the TV display and spray painting the back of the plexi I get a very professional looking product.    The black border now gives me a nice little backdrop to put some artwork, like MK moves lists or something for example.

With that done, I'm waiting on my few coin door parts to arrive so that I can get everything lit and functional.

The best part about doing this bezel was waiting for the paint to dry while playing all the way through Metal Slug.  22 continues was my final tally... time to get practicing.

One step at a time!

It looks great already and your plans sound cool too. Can't wait to see finished. Any plans to stealth the laptop drawer? It looks like what the piece along the side is cut for...

Good eye! That is indeed what the little sliver of MDF is for. The panel above the laptop drawer will get the vinyl laminate treatment too. I haven't bolted those pieces in yet because I'm not sure if I like the power strip placement inside the cab currently, and it's easier (at this point) to do stuff from the front than man handle the cab to get access from behind through the back panel. Thanks for the compliments!

Does your laptop have WiFi ? if it has wireless networking, you can connect it up to LogMeIn.com or download a free VNC server package and remote control your laptop without needing to take it out of the cabinet. Logmein works over a web interface, VNC needs a client installed on whatever computer you're going to remote control from and then the server 'listening' software on the laptop. Just a thought.

What are your plans for the joystiq / button shelf there?

Pretty good frame choice - built one similar a few years ago and it's cool to see a similar solution. I'm with tank on the question of the control panel. What's the plan? Keep the picutres coming

For the control panel, my sister is a painter and tattoo artist, and when I said I might need some custom artwork she jumped all over it. She's making me a Kung-Lao vs. Baraka themed control panel with shurikens/chinese stars for the joystick directional indicators. That bit of art will go on top of the MDF and under the plexi that is currently on there. I'm also going to route in a T-molding channel like on the front of the cab for around the edges of the cp. The laptop does have WiFi, but honestly, the drawer slides out easy and disappears just as quickly. It's the equivalent of the keyboard/mouse drawer that folks typically have installed on these cabs. I'll put up some pics of the mechanism in action. It's pretty slick if I say so myself! I'll be sure to keep the pics coming, and thanks for the interest for the "new guy."
