As some of you may remember, I found a Pac-Man cocktail machine burried in a locked tractor trailer behind a coin-op operator's warehouse a little over a month ago. This is what the game looked like when I found it.
After bringing it home, cleaning it up a bit and vacuumnig out a good bit of mouse hair, nesting and crap, I took the control panels off of the machine and removed the game board from inside the cabinet. It turns out that the board was actually a Ms. Pac-man board with a speed mod and it worked perfectly. So I put the Ms. Pac-Man board in my upright Ms. Pac-Man cabinet and started looking for various spare parts for this cocktail cab. Well, since I had another Pac-Man plus board out at a friends shop undergoing repairs, and Pac-Man plus is my girlfriend's favorite variation of this Pac-Man games, I figured I would put the Pac-Plus board in the upright and work on "converting" the cocktail into a Ms. Pac-man machine with all the proper artwork. Next I ordered a new Ms. Pac-man reproduction underlay for the top glass and will have to get a new replacement glass at some point. The one currenty on this cocktail cabinet is very scratched up and has Pac-Man artwork silk-screen to it.
Today, I got my Pac-Man Plus board back, much to my girlfriend's suprise and excitement. I had a spare Pac-Man Plus marquee, so I replaced the Ms. Pac marquee and the board.
It might look a bit funny, with the Ms. Pac-Man side and front artwork and the Pac-Man Plus marquee, but the truth is that all Pac-Man Plus arcade cabs are conversions from either Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man, so this isn't so far off what might have been seen in the arcades "back in the day".
Now my girl has her favorite game to play and I have a spare working board for my cocktail project. Stay tuned for updates as things progress.
Now the Bad
Last night I went down to play a game or two of Robotron and noticed that the screen stayed dark when I turned the machine on, though the marquee and coin door light lit up. After investigating a few things I found this inside:
It appears that one of the pins on the power supply board was corroded and caused the connector to overheat. I am hoping that this only resulted in a blown fuse, but won't know until I can get a new connector, pinset for the board and replace all the wiring leading into the connector. I went ahead and bought a spare power supply circuit board off of Ebay via auction last night just in case this board is fried and have my fingers crossed that nothing on the actual game logic board was harmed when this game went out. Keep your fingers crossed. I hope to be playing Robotron again very soon.
