TRON Night Recap - This Movie Will Be AMAZING

I just returned from TRON Night 2010 at the Boston Common Regal Cinemas and thought I would update everyone on my impressions. The first and only real dissapointing aspect of the evening was the fact that only about 50 - 60 people showed up to check out the preview despite the fact tht over 500 seat tickets were issued via the online reservation system. This really sucks as I am sure that there are many folks who decided not to show up thinking that they would not be able to get access to the theater to check out the preview. Oh well, the low turnout meant that my good friend Emminentt and I were able to grab some extra SWAG for you, our peeps (more on this in a moment).

Upon arriving people who had tickets were qued up, cross-referenced with a registration list and given wrist bands (like the one pictured above). Those without tickets were asked to line up separately. Luckily, everyone who showed up was granted access, regardless of ticket possesion. Shortly after arriving and lining up, we were asked to check in all cell phones and cameras. After that, one of the Press Reps for Disney passed out these very cool TRON Legacy posters.

As mentioned above, Emminett and I were able to score some extras, so read to the bottom of this blog to learn how you can win one. After the posters were handed out, we were checked via a scanner one more time for cameras and then let inside the theater. Everyone had choice seats and we preceeded to wait the hour or so for the show to start. Right at 7:00 pm, the Disney rep took the mic, made a few quick announcements and then told us to get ready to enter the GRID. Dim the lights, let the show begin.

Lythisea and ZombieKitty over at the Unfiction forums have already posted nice summaries of the content show, so check those reports out here. I just want to give a few of my impressions. Of the six scenes show in the preview, the first two were in standard definition. These two section set up the story for those unfamiliar with what Flynn has been up to since the events depicted in the original TRON movie. Scene three is when the good shit came on screen, with a wide view of the Recognizer and other wayward "programs" which were being collected off the grid. The 3d is crystal clear, probably the best I have seen to date (Emminentt about we his pants on the Disney intro of Cinderella's Castle before any footage stated). The action scenes (including Deadly Disk, Light Cycle, Light Runner and Light Plane sequences) were simply amazing. There were a few cool nods to the orginal movie and all things retro (who caught the Coleco hand-held baseball game during the scene in Flynn's Arcade?), but the key to this movie is going to be the action scenes. Although we only got a brief taste of what to expect, all I can say is that I was VERY impressed and cannot wait to see the movie on December 17th.

Of course, in addition to the action and special effects, a highlight of the preview was the soundtrack by Daft Punk. They even made an appearance during one scene at the End of Line Club. Definitely check this music out if you are into Deep House and/or DP. It really sets the tone for the film. One of the hand-outs (pictured above) included an online code for $100 off of the new TRON Legacy laptop by Asus. I might just have to check that out as we need a second computer around our joint.

After the preview ended, the crowd was a bit sedate. A few people clapped (including me) but most just got up and left the theater. My guess is that the reaction would have been much more robust if more people were in attendance.

As I mentioned earlier, we were able to score some extra posters on the way out. I have 5 spares to hand out, so post a reply here and I will choose five people at random to receive one.

2ol2play TRON Legacy Premier Event

Lest you think that the TRON Legacy coverage is over, I am currently working to host a 2old2play TRON Legacy Premier Event at a local Boston-area theater on December 17th when the movie releases. So far things are looking very good and we "may" have some pretty cool TRON-related SWAG to give away, so stay tuned here for updates coming very soon.

My brother and I went to Methuen to see it. Probably about 50 people, we thought there'd be more too. The rep that was giving out the wristbands said they'd been lining up since noon down in DC. Cannot wait for this to come out.

Yeah it was the same swag: poster, the two cards and the wristband. Plus they gave us coupons on the way out. One that let us see any movie, tonight only, for a reduced rate and another to use on another visit as long as it's in the next few weeks for a free popcorn and soda. Probably the most I've ever gotten at a sneak preview.

Oh and yes I did laugh when I saw the handheld coleco game :) I also noticed the crowd was "older" if you will. We had maybe 2 teenagers and a little kid.
