Friend or Foe? EA and UbiSoft

In late 2004/early 2005, Electronic Arts(EA) made a bid to buy an almost 20% stake in publisher UbiSoft. Understandably, UbiSoft feared a hostile takeover by one of its biggest rivals. A move to merge the two companies together would greatly benefit EA who hasn't had great success developing anything other than sports games.

Behind the NUMB3RS

There is an interesting post on the Wolfram Research Blog about the television show NUMB3RS.

The mathematics and concepts introduced on the show are based on actual theories. To ensure accuracy, the producers consult mathematicians for fact checking and production design.

Playing ball with the IRS

Apparently, the guy that caught Barry Bond's record breaking home run ball joined a new tax bracket just by coming up with the ball.

ESPN is reporting that once the kid took possesion of the ball, he is automatically liable for taxes on the worth of the ball. Even if he doesn't sell it, he could be forced to pay taxes in upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus additional capital gains taxes when he sells it. Quoting the article:

For example

Mashed up movie titles

If you're a movie geek you'll love this game.

Take any two actors who have made a film with a common word in the title, then mash the two movie titles together.

For example

Robin Williams, Bruce Willis
Moscow on the Hudson Hawk

Drew Barrymore, Christopher Lloyd
Charlie's Angels in the Outfield

Movie titles have to have at least two words. The last word of the first title has to be the first word of the second.
