It runs hot and doesn't pack the alpha strike punch of other mechs, but I've had a lot of luck sniping against 2 Gauss Catapults. Constant rocking throws off their aim.
Besides, a giant machinegun is fun as hell to use.
Yeah chain fire is working. Hit backspace to toggle chain fire on the group. With the 3 AC/2 Dragon, all 3 fire within 1/2 second, which leaves a 1/2 second gap. So to get pretty even spacing I stuck with all 3 in weapon group 2, 1 in group 4, and 1 in group 5. Then I hit 4, 5, and hold down mouse button 2. The spacing isn't perfect, but it provides more constant fire than chain fire. On the other hand chain fire is a lot easier to do in the heat of battle.
Oh and chain fire isn't that great for lasers, the second weapon only fires after the first weapon is finished with it's entire 1-2 second fire duration.
Have had very good results, use PPCs and AC/5s to snipe, can get off 4 or so PPC shots before needing to cool. Can still fire the AC/5s while you cool down without worrying about shutting down.

I use the 3 AC/2s like a machinegun.

any build ideas without xl? The cost to repair them is now a bitch
When the game goes back up I'll post my non-XL gausscat. I've got more kills with that thing than all my other mechs combined I bet :)
I haven't tried chain firing yet: is that how you've been achieving a machine gun effects with the AC2s, Retribution? I'll have to give that a try :)
The K2 I had posted started out with a standard engine. I think I had a standard 220, no AMS, and possibly 1 less heatsink.

That may be better for pulse lasers than regular ones.
My new favorite Catapult K-2
