Info on Golden Keys

So, you’ve got a Golden Key. Maybe you pre-ordered Borderlands 2 from a Premiere Club retailer or maybe you were lucky enough to snag a code from a Gearbox event or giveaway -- there are a variety of ways to get a Golden Key, and somehow you nabbed one.

“But how, O handsome Gearbox developers,” you ask, “does the Golden Key work? Exactly? Also you are very handsome.”

Firstly, thank you for the compliment. Secondly, the Golden Key is a rare item that unlocks a special Golden Chest in the friendly city of Sanctuary. Here’s what that Golden Chest looks like:

So, you’ve got a Golden Key in your profile and you start up the game. What happens next?

Firstly, you’ll have to get to the city of Sanctuary. This should take you about three hours (two hours to play through the missions leading up to Sanctuary, and one hour for physical recovery after you injure yourself laughing at the impeccably written dialog).

Then, you’ve got a decision to make. See, the loot inside the Golden Chest is always of “very rare” (purple) quality and scaled to your character’s level at the moment you open the chest. If you’ve only got one Key, you need to consider: do I want some high-quality loot right now, or do I want to wait until I’m closer to the (considerably more difficult) end of the game? Do I want my Level 21 Maya to open the chest, or should I switch to my Level 33 Axton?

Keep in mind that you cannot trade or sell Golden Keys, and once you’ve used a Key to open the Golden Chest, that Key is gone for good. So, you know. Choose carefully.

Whatever your decision, the loot you get from the Golden Chest is like any other piece of loot in the game – you can trade it, stash it, or sell it at your own discretion!

Hmm, I have no idea when I'm going to open that box.  I don't want it too early.  Maybe around 30-35 or so?  Is the max level going to be around 69 again after DLC?

The max level at launch is 50, I'm almost certain. The skill trees on the official site only allow for that high, anyway. In every interview I've watched, no one has confirmed that they will be increasing the cap with DLC. Of course it seems obvious to all of us that they will, but, also consider that they're making it somewhat reasonable to respec your skill points.

Alright, I think I'll open it around 25 or so then.  I figure the purples will start to drop around 40-45, so the purple inside the chest should be prety good up until then I think....

That is just one more thing that makes Borderlands so cool. They get what their game is about... the LOOT! Making it a bit of a gamble is very much in line with the game's personality. To be honest I am sooo bad with waiting, I will probbaly open it first thing when I get there. Then regret it!

I figure i'll be finding all kinds of awesome stuff at the start of the game.  IT's the late game where you realize the awesome stuff you've been using isnt' cutting it anymore and better stuff is harder to find.    That's the point where i'll visit this chest.

Agreed with Tank.

Hopefully I don't get a new revolver for the AR spec soldier.

I'll probably save it for my 2nd character. I'll play the whole thing with friends on the first character and that always gets you better loot than you'd get solo anyway. Then you get to the second character who's not quite as strong and ya feel weak, so that's when I'll open the chest and get my goodies. I just hope it's loot designed for that character. Nothin like playing as the sniper in Borderlands and finding chest after chest filled with shotguns and those shitty pistols nobody ever used. Did anyone use a pistol? I didn't even bother picking them up after a point.

I'm only level 11 but I'm thinking about using my key pretty soon.  The way I see it now's the time when purple gear would be really handy because I'm only seeing occasional blues and greens.  When I get to later levels and purples are dropping on a regular basis the golden key gear won't necessarily be any better than what I'll already have.

So I'll use my key, maybe get something really nice for the early levels, and enjoy it.  I think if I wait till I'm level 50 and already have a lot of pruple/orange stuff it'll most likely be a disappointment.

On the main menu of the game you can sign up for Shift in the extras menu. If you do, you get 1 more golden key.

I signed up just to see what you get. It is a golden key. The actual SHIFT program looks like it just gathers gaming info, like how Bioware does with ME. At least from what I read before I signed up, that's what I got from it.

Hell if I know, it's some kinda Gearbox thing. You give em your email and a little later you get a confirmation email. There's nothing on the site, but after a couple hours it said I now have 2 gold keys.

I was gonna use my key some where between 20-25 but now that I am looting orange(1) and purples(2) at 13 I think I am gonna see how long I can wait.

I'll have to check out this SHIFT thing when I get home.  I was gonna wait but if I can get an extra key to burn, why wait!  :)

Does the key show up in your inventory? I can't seem to find any of the pre-order crap. Hopefully I did not sell it on accident while people were complaining about taking too much time in menus.

Check your menu, before selecting a character to play.

It is not readily visible in game inventory and you cannot sell it in game.

Horders... LOL, Don't over think it guys... it's just randomly generated purple items for your current level.

In a couple different games I and others have opened the chests. At level 9, I got two pistols. Another guy got shields, another guy got rifles and a final player got sniper rifles.

The shields and rifles were OK. One of my pistols had high rate of fire, large mag, and fire but no scope so was decent, not great. One of the snipers were decent with fire on it and a bonus to stability with OK damage. Nothing game breaking in any case.

I'm sure the longer you wait, the better the item will be in respect to your level. However, there's always the chance that any other item you find in the game will be equally cool or better. So, openning late game in your second playthrough could be rather anti-climatic.

From my perspective, I was able to use one of the items I got right now, and still using it for a level or two before replacing. That was good enough for me.

At level 10, we were using the slot machines in Moxies at Sanctuary and finding purples and Eridium after going through about 3K each in one visit, LOL.

Final thought.... the chest only gives purples... Rarity to consider...

1. White

2. Green

3. Blue

4. Purple (gold chest)

5. E-Tech (New, and first quest given after visiting Zed at Sanctuary) and is still better / err... rarer than the purples in rarity

6. Orange is still better than the purples in rarity

7. Think we'll see perl from the Crawmerax equivilent... ???

Cheers,

So it sounds like signing up for shift is a no brainer.

I know this was a pre order perk.

Is there a code you have to use?

If so, where is the code?

I didnt get anything from the kid at Best Buy...

You should have gotten a code for the premiere club stuff that includes a key, some started guns, and free mechromancer dlc.  Amazon emailed me mine a day late, but it showed up eventually.  Not sure how best buy gives out the codes.

Code was on my receipt from GameStop.

If you didn't get one from GameStop preorder, then you can also go to your lobby screen (before picking characters) and click "extra" and do the "Shift" sign up thing for another gold key.

Cheers,

Amazon sent me an email ahead of my copy arriving. Double check your email, they also sent me an amazon promotional code, so, the Borderlands thing got buried in my gmail.

(unless I was still asleep) I got a message for a 3rd shortly after I joined a public game throught the matchmaking game browser.  Not sure what all the qualifiers are, but it may be worth your time to try it out. Happy Hunting.

 I have 3 keys also.

I'm going to wait until a higher level to use any of them.

 I'm only a 13 right now.
