Graveyard.sav viral infection (aka Badass Mode)
Graveyard.sav viral infection (aka Badass Mode)
There is a nasty viral gamesave bug going around. Apparently Gearbox intended to have a hardcore mode in BL2 where you only have 1 life. Somehow after the Booty DLC was released, this feature got out in the wild. Not sure if the timing was coincidence or if gamesave hacking was ground zero.
At any rate, the fastest way to get this mode turned on is if you play with randoms, or play with a friend who plays with randoms. If you go into a room with someone else who has the hardcore flag set to ON, it'll turn it on in your game save as well. Once it's on, if you die, your gamesave is renamed to 'graveyard.sav' and all the character data of the one that died is basically gone.
Here is the best FAQ i've been able to find on the matter

Thanks for the info. I just made a backup and will make frequent backups. I will not let this happen for as much time as I've put in the game :)
Thanks for the heads up Tank. Reposted this to the Westies Forum.

Fuck that. I'm glad I don't jump in random rooms. I'd be done if al my stuff got deleted after a death. I get pissed enough at how much cash I lose.
If it happens to you, you're not completely boned. But you know what they say, when you loot whore with randoms you're loot whoring with every random that random has ever loot whored with.
Wiser words were never spoken!
I've never played with randoms either.
Important Notice for Xbox 360 Players
10.23.12 - Chris FaylorRecently a few users have begun violating the Xbox Live Code of Conduct by using an external application to maliciously disrupt the experience and sabotage characters of legitimate Borderlands 2 players on Xbox 360. Fortunately it’s easy to avoid this scenario.
While we work to resolve this as quickly as possible with our partners, concerned Xbox 360 players of Borderlands 2 should consider playing online with trusted individuals in non-public sessions. This does not affect players on PC or PlayStation 3.
We also advise that before ceasing play, users always select "Save and Quit" from within the pause menu while their character is alive. If after the death of their character players find themselves at the main menu of Borderlands 2 instead of respawning in-game, be sure to immediately select "Continue" to resume playing as that character.
We ask that players report any suspicious behavior in Borderlands 2 to spotted@gearboxsoftware.com and provide as much details and documentation of their disrupted experience as possible to assist us in our investigation.
For what it is worth. Sounds pretty vague to me but at leat they formally acknowledged there is a problem. HERE is a link to the forum post:

Ya turns out modders found the flag to turn this feature 'on' but because of a 4 year old bug that existed in BL1 that gearbox neglected to fix, it's able to spread. coop game corruption was a problem in BL1 as well sothere's no excuse why that wasn't fixed in BL2. So both sides share the blame on this one as far as i'm concerned.
