Ok movie, action based, great effects, no ending due to it being part 1 of 3. I did not care for it much as a movie but it was entertaining, if that makes sense.
My 20 year old and his girlfriend have seen it multiple times and loved it. All my younger kids loved it. My wife liked it more than me.
It was great! If you enjoyed the Lord of the rings movies then there is nothing that will keep you from enjoying this one too!
I agree. Same if you're a fan of the books. Otherwise it might be tough. Seems like they're painstakingly recreating the book. For anyone new to or meh on Middle Earth I think it could be a bit tedious and too long.
Also agree with 3D. Occassionally amazing, frequently distracting, and ultimately beyond my (sober) tolerance limit.
I saw it with my wife. For me, it felt very much like Fellowship of the Rings. They're adventuring towards a mountain and the movie ends very similar, they're overlooking a valley withthe mountain in the distance. The movie to me was very formularic. IT was still good, it was just very familiar, i think my wife fell asleep thru parts of it because it was droning on with it's excessive runtime. They could have made it 2 hours, optimized the story bits and upped the adventuring action bits. Parts of it didn't even make sense, like the rock creature fight, wtf was that even? Just struck me as stupid and pointless, maybe it was there for the 3D folks to look cool.

That’s a good example of what I meant by “painstaking recreation”. The rock creature fight was a really memorable scene in the book for me. But it’s just one of many, many, many things that made Bilbo’s journey long an arduous. It has nothing to do with the ring or hobbits or the struggle for control of Middle Earth. For me it was cool as hell. The movie really didn’t need it.
Because they would have been spotted and ring wraiths riding dragons, orcs manning ballistas and legions of goblins woulda been waiting for them.
Of course after the ring had been spotted in rivendel they shoulda made a stealth flight at night out of there to somewhere else... Of course we can be sure spies and the eye of Sauron would not have been fooled by such obvious deception.

For LotR tyuor argument is valid I understand. I think the picture maybe confused everybody. I was talking about The Hobbit. Talking about the Lonely Mountain.
Well we have to consider the motivations of the eagles. One might assume that they are noble creatures and undoubtedly intelligent, who would willingly come to the aid of good creatures in their most dire moments, but would not act as mount for the purpose of greed and revenge.
Also if the dwarves failed, smaug may want revenge on the eagles for dropping them off on his doorstep. When in doubt always look to thyn own ass first.
I am gonna go see it tomorrow.
Let us know.

Side note, doubtful i needed to watch it in 3d but I did, and I think it was more distracting then anything.

I liked it. There is alot more lore in this than in the LOTR movies.
Seen it ... loved it ... and want more !
Why didn't they just take the fucking eagles to Lonely Mountain?

Ahhh the picture was very misleading.

MERP dragons are bad ass as far as high fantasy dragons go...
