my long-term computer building project
my long-term computer building project
So some of you guys have heard about my cobbling together of a computer. It started with MWO: I had an HP Pavillion to begin with; one of the "better" ones, AMD-FX6100, 8 Gigs DDR3, a 6000-range Radeon, and a Gigabyte OEM board. This was a perfectly fine machine for most things, but MWO got me interested in playing PC games, and so the process of upgrading began. It started with the graphics, then a power supply that could handle the graphics, then a new CPU that was better for gaming, then a new mobo so I could overclock the CPU, then a new case that could actually contain all of this stuff. It never ends. Next: memory.
Anyhow, as I mentioned, I'm going to overclock it this weekend. I stuck this thing in it, the Cooler Master Hyper 612 PWM:
It's incredible. I was idling at about 45C with the stock cooler, and with this thing in, it's idling at about 32C. I tried a Prime95 stress test over lunch, and it hovered about 51C for the whole hour! It's also huge... thank goodness I bought the mid-tower when I did... it's almost touching the cover of my case when attached to the CPU!
I know this isn't a very constructive MWO post, but I know at least some of you guys will be able to identify with my excitement over my new toys :)
I for one find that computer hardware is my porn... That is a bitching cooler! Is that a pic of your board? if so i noticed that there is a single RAM slot open. It looks like dual channel ram, they work best in identical pairs. If I am being to nosey let me know.
For all you game heads out there. A little advice HDD speed will often effect your computers ability to run a game. If you are using a conventional drive and have the port I would highly recommend an 10K SATA 3 drive. Also the smaller the partition the faster the seek. I know new egg had 10K SATA 3 drives on sale recently. Also a huge deal is checking your boards preferred RAM. All manufactures will have a list available at their website. Matching board manufactures is also very important to trouble free operation. Example ASUS MB / ASUS Vcard.
Shutting up now... See you all on Saturday.
It's porn for me too dude... so much so that I'm kind of kicking myself for not taking more pics of the install! So yeah, that's not my mobo, I chose that pic because it kind of captured just how monstrous this cooler looks on the mobo. Mine looked a lot like that though. No worries about being nosey... I'm always down for advice! Especially given that my next purchase is going to be new memory for this box!
I was actually thinking that the next purchase (after the memory) would be a SSD for the OS, but their tiny size for the price has always turned me off. Maybe a SATA 3.0 with high RPMs as you suggest is a better choice for me! I have been matching parts to a certain extent... ASUS Sabretooth 990FX mobo, ASUS Radeon HD 7870 vcard.
I had a productive night last night... after I stuck the cooler in I fixed our washing machine! If I'm being honest though I only did that so the wife wouldn't nag me when I spent the whole weekend playing with the computer while the washing machine sat partially disassembled... :)
ETA: I think i'd get in trouble for using any of those products, Kurupt :)
Found you some porn Cyn....

I have lots of advice and registry entry's to share for the ssd but I will need a keyboard cause my phone just is not cutting it. I will post later after the movie!!
And please Lord do not let Valcutta see any of the things kurupt posted!!! I fear there would be no end to the crap I will receive.
There is absolutely nothing like that rush of firing up all the new components, seeing the correct lights blink, the fans spin up...and no smoke!
I recently went through a similar experience. because my work had me travelling quite a bit my last 3 computers were "gaming" laptops.
So very grateful for them while I travelled, but got so tired of inferior graphics or waiting for the computer moves to complete in Civ V or Total War.
Finally built another desktop PC, after over 7 years! Had forgotten how wonderful it was not to worry about the requirements of a game or sliding those bars to the lower settings.
Put a decent enough graphics card in her to be able to run three monitors in Eyefinity. Mechwarrior is SO much better, even if my piloting skills are not!!!
Allow me to extend my most sincere congratulations on a project well made.
I hear that, Maverick! I'm a confident computer builder, but there's always a sigh of relief when I've had the guts of the thing in my hand and I've put it all together and it boots. And I hear you about the motivation: I was always addicted to Civ 4, and on most of my old machines, late-game large map gameplay was brutally slow! I'm optimistic about this machine when I inevitably get back to the Civ franchise :)
I wonder if my card could handle Eyefinity? I think I'd need a second card and would need to crossfire them? Something I'll have to look into!
Thanks, Maverick! See you in game!
Not certain about the 6000 range, I'm running the Radeon 7850 at stock settings and have had zero issues or need (at this time) to overclock...hoping it'll last me awhile!
Yeah, my current card is a 7870... I'll have to do my homework! :)
