Hello

I'm the new guy. Thanks Pearly for letting me in. I play a lot of board games and card games. I recently thought about giving Magic a try. I picked up Planeswalker and have been learning the game. I also picked up a few starter desk for my sons and I to play. Really enjoying the game but I also understand I have a lot to learn. Originally I thought I wanted to learn how to play and then maybe play at my local comic shop but then I realized, most of the people playing there are probably young enough to be my kids. Then I decided to try online. I have not set anything up yet because I am not 100% sure what I need yet. I have a bad habit of jumping into things too quickly. Figured i should take this slow. Anything else you want to know, just ask.

Welcome H2

Best advice I can give you is to enter the clan room by typing......   /join 2old2play

There are lots of clannies online but not all of them are active. Some of them i haven't talked to in years or even ever. If you're not in the room I prolly won't bother you as you might be deck building, buying cards, playing in a draft or just playing privately with friends. I figure people that want interaction with the clan will come into that room. It also keeps me from having to keep lots of different windows open trying to keep track of people.

In this clan we tend to play "Classic" format by default. You can challenge me with your Standard deck but you need to put the game type on classic or my deck won't be legal. I don't even have a STD legal deck I don't think. However, some clannies do, just clarify what flavor you're playing if it's not the default Classic. (Seahorse is a clannie that prefers STD and doesn't play the rest of us much cuz we're all Classic, so look him up).

Every Sunday we play a tourney that's determined by the winner of the previous week. Great way to start meeting us. Last Sunday the game was Vanilla Perm,... rules were, vanilla crits only (creatures with NO abilities) and only permanents allowed, (no sorceries or instants). Fortunecase won so this week he called Silver-Black, (only commons & uncommons allowed). Just show up with a deck @ 11:00 AM Eastern time. There's no $$$ needed or won...just glory.

Have fun! 172

Board games?  I loves me some board games!  My user name is DrStrange.

I think the Heirloom league we are about to start would be a another great way to start as no one will have great decks and you can get a bunch of cards cheap.

As for buying cards I suggest you can start with MTGOTradersFreeBot.  Packs can be expensive for few good cards.

After that the bots at http://www.mtgotraders.com/store/bots.html are good as well as the bots at Cardhoarder.  I've used both for years.  Start with lots of cheap commons untill  you learn the game find out what you like.

Be seeing you!

I just started playing board games about a year ago and have gone way down that rabbit hole!!

Some of the more recent ones have been Eclipse, 7 Wonders, Lords of Waterdeep and a few I got for xmas that haven't hit the table yet like War of the Ring, Netrunner and Last Night on Earth.

"Just one game," they said, and started to play -- that was yesterday. -- Chinese proverb

Welcome, H2Daddy.  I will have to find you in game to officially make you a clannie.  Maybe Sunday?  Join us for the tourney.  It is very informal and we can help you get started.

@Bill:  DrStrange?  not any more!  LordStark!  Ha!

Welcome H2!

I still have our junk card account, so once you get started and have more of an idea of what cards you want you can browse through it. We can help you with navigating the MTGO client as most of us have been around for years.

What time zone are you in? I'm in Eastern, and am usually on 2-3 evenings during the week to see if anyone is around and to deckbuild. Typically 8ish.

My MTGO nick is parottthead.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I will try and get an account set up in the next night or two and start looking around at how things work. I am in the eastern time zone and during the week, I game from around 8-10 or 11. I guess the whole deck building part of this is what scares me.  I am slowly learning on prebuilt decks and things are starting to make a little sense to me but the thought of building my own deck from scratch terrifies me. I wouldn't have a clue where to begin. Hopefully you all can help me make sense of it all.

@ Dr Strange - Have you checked out a sight called Boardgamegeek.com? Great boardgame site. I spend a lot of time over there. You have some great games on your list that are on my want list. I am hearing great things about 7 Wonders.  I almost bought Netrunner but ended up getting Star Wars The Card Game and just the other day Lord of the Rings the Card Game. Played Lord of the Rings the Card Game with my 9 year old and really like it. It is a coop game for 1-4 people. SW The Card Game is more head to head like Netrunner.

I look forward to gaming with everyone.

Welcome H2Daddy17

Don't worry about deckbuilding......yet

When you create an account you get several prebuilt planeswalker decks.

This is a starter format and those cards can not be traded.

You also get several "normal"magic decks so you can play with those in the other formats.

There are a lot of (budget)decklists you can check on several sites so perhaps you can copy a funny deck.

Just beware....once you get the hang of this game there is a big chance you're going to like building a deck.

You see , its fun trying to connect unconnectable cards.(if you like to puzzle)

Hope to see you in game.

Just took the plunge. Signed up for an account. It is downloading. Really hope the computer can run it. I didn't check specs. It runs WoW decently so keeping my fingers crossed. Says I have an hour and a half left to download. Hopefully by the time I get back from going out to eat, I can play around with it a bit.

I think you will find that deckbuilding can be just as addicting, ahem, fun, as the game itself.  And I still look at articles on various websites and check out the decks others have built.  I have been known to "netdeck", which is simply "borrowing" a deck that someone has already built.  And I may tweak it a bit to make it more "Penni friendly".  Whatever, we will help you any way we can.

I finally got it downloaded and updated late last night. Really didn't have time to figure anything out. Starting out, it is not very new player friendly. I clicked a tab to look at my cards and it said I had one, the new player starter kit, or whatever they called it. I couldn't get it open to look at anything. It was late and I was tired an impatient so I went to bed. I will try to figure it out tonight.  I am actually going to go to my local comic shop tonight. They have a new player/casual night on Thursdays. I emailed the owner and it sounds like it is laid back and that there should be some people there willing to teach. I don't have much beyond some basic starter decks but I am going to give it a try anyways. When I get back from that, I will hop on and see if I can figure out the online version.

Forgot to ask earlier but what is the difference between classic and standard?  Told you I didn't know what I was doing.

http://wizards.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/471/~/magic-online%3A-formats-faq

This should answer most of your questions i think.

In short.....standard are the latest sets and classic is everything online.

modern and extended are somewhere in between those.

Because it can be pretty expensive/timeconsuming to keep up with standard most of us play classic.

That doesn't mean we don't use new cards , heh, there are allways some cool cards in new sets.

Now to get your cards....go to collection...on one of the last pages of the binder you will find several items.

click on the starter kit and you will be able to open it.

Your cards should be in your collection after that.

Hope this helps137

Big thanks to Niteowl. Hopped online tonight and he showed me the ropes. Even got to play a few games. Can't wait to meet some more of you. Now I just need to figure out a deck or two to put together. I can already tell this is going to be time consuming.
