Ni no Kuni - Wrath of the White Witch

Both of my daughters and my wife like Studio Ghibli, so I bought Ni no Kuni at a discount with some credit at GameStop this past weekend.

We've plowed through the first six or seven hours (grinding with areas after the kids are in bed a little) and have a few thoughts.

If you don't like earnest characters spouting "Neato!" and "Jeepers!", look elsewhere.  If the thought of spending forty hours or more in a JRPG relentlessly moving forward to fight ONE MORE BATTLE to get to CASTLE X to talk to NPC Y to get SWORD Z, stop now.  If you prefer not to min-max equipment, elemental types and preset battle choices for your party, I'd advise spending your time elsewhere.

If the thought of an endearing, soft hearted, expansive JRPG along the lines of Dragon Quest VIII with various types of loot/alchemy/crafting, a large open world with multiple hidden secrets, a collective creature system akin to Pokemon draped in the artstyle of Studio Ghibli with a Welshman for a sidekick excites you, boy have I got good news for you.

I've seen a few of our members on PSN playing the game and would welcome their comments so far.  I've enjoyed Ni no Kuni in the amount of time I have spent with it.

I want to play it but won't pay 60 dollars for it.  I love Ghibli films and am interested in this but jrpg's are the type of games where if you try to play anything else you will lose interest in them.  So I'm going to wait.

I've heard nothing but fantastic things about it but haven't picked it up yet.

It is enjoyable.  The collectible aspect of the critters is fun.  My kids are still engaged (but have to leave the room during boss fights due to stress, apparently).  We're playing on "Normal" and have lost a few times, penalty is 10% of your gold to start nearby again.

Made it through the main part of the game, defeating Shadar, around 65 hours.  Now for (kind of) post-game content!

Playing with my daughter.  So far she walks around the overworld//town's and does the diaglog portions.  I do the battles since she is only 5 and on normal they can be challenging.  I read the dialog to her so it's almost like reading her a interactive book.  Glad Level 5 still get's what makes a JRPG fun since Square/Enix seems to have lost that magic.  Great game.

I'm slowly working my way through it. Its the first JRPG in a long while that I'm actualy enjoying, the previous one being Dragon Quest 8. Well worth the price of admission.

Got through the main story and the add-on boss at the end last night.  All the tasks/hunts/errands are complete.  Now we're just filling out the familiar index, scrounging materials and completing the combat challenges.  Overall a fun game.
