Track types

Now that I have a number of tunes, I'm trying to understand how the various settings compare.  To that end, Im working on a spreadsheet with the various settings to find trends based on track type to help me develop some base settings

What I'm looking for is how would you guys classify these tracks with regards to handling/corners? I know most of these tracks have a combination of corner types however, if you were to classify these into three types, what would they be.   My goal is to have three base tunes for some of my cars in each class as a starting point based on the three general classifications.

  1. Long sweeping turns
  2. Tight turns
  3. Balanced/Base

  • Hockenheim -
  • Iberian -

  • Indy GP - Balanced/Base
  • Infineon - Balanced/Base
  • Ladera Test Track - Tight turns
  • Lemans - Long sweeping turns
  • Maple Valley - Long sweeping turns
  • Laguna Seca - Balanced/Base
  • Mugello - Long sweeping turns
  • Nurburgring GP - Balanced/Base
  • Nordschleife - Long sweeping turns
  • Rally di Positano - Tight turns
  • Road America - Balanced/Base
  • Road Atlanta - Long sweeping turns
  • Sebring - Balanced/Base
  • Sedona - Long sweeping turns
  • Silverstone - Balanced/Base

This classification is a bit of an over simplification though.  It suggests that the same car that does well at Maple Valley should do well at Sunset, which is just not the case.  What you're not taking into account is the length of the straights between the corners.  You're better off thinking in terms of:

Grip ->  5  4  3  2  1  <-Power

  • Rally di Positano - 5
  • Road America - 2
  • Road Atlanta - 2
  • Sebring - 1
  • Sedona - 3
  • Silverstone - 2
  • Sunset - 1
  • Suzuka - 2
  • Tsukuba - 4
  • Twin Ring Motegi - 3
  • Top Gear - 2

These are my guesses based off of experience.  Some may fall one category more towards grip or power, but should be fairly accurate.  When considering the value I used the largest circuit.  Some tracks will drastically change the need for grip or power based on the ribbon you drive.

Edit: The initial balance of the car has to be taken into account as well.  If you have a handling of 3 and a speed of 6, then even if you're driving the Nordschleife you will benefit from shoring up the handling on the car rather than just jamming more power into it.  Each car's final needs must be determined on a case by case basis.

Thinking further on it, you could combine the two sets of classifications.  The first set should be used to determine the tune.  How stable under braking, how much rotation on/off throttle, those considerations.  The second set would be used to help determine the build of the car; how much power, how much grip.

Thanks.  That is how I was reading it also.  Right now, Im just looking at existing tunes and how to best classify them.  Building a car from scratch is step 2 in the process.  Im just trying to digest this animal in small bites as best I can.

Umm, I wouldn't try to have three tunes for one class of and specific car, some simply don't lend themselves to all three types of tracks, Better I think, to have a car for a type of track, and another for another. At best maybe two tunes for two types of tracks, what cars good on all of them? Besids, you can have 550 cars, so why so frugal? Or another way, do you really want 1650 tunes?

Thats what im trying to get to eventually.  Right now, Im trying to see if there are trends in some of the setups im using to see where I can go from there
