Mobile monthly usage question.
I'm trying to figure out what mobile package to pick for our first smartphones. What kind of monthly data usage have you people been experiencing? Could you include whether you think you are a heavy or light data user.
Also consider that you can use wireless access and keep your data down when at home and certain locations.
Myself, wife and son all have 2gig a month each, and the boy only got near that once.
What oldschool said. When you are at home have your device(s) automatically log into your wifi. This will save you a ton of usage, at least your cellular data usuage. LOL
My info:
We do not have a home phone line, so our cell phones are our primary contact phone numbers. I have a plan the gives me 1500 anytime/use minutes of talk, unlimited data, unlimited text messages and free mobile to mobile phone calls. I also connect to available wifi when I am out and about and have access to a useable wifi connection.
I have 4 phones on my plan (mine, my wifes, my mom and my mother in law).
Over the past year the most minutes I used in one month was just under 200 and my average over the past year is 131.
Over the past year the most data I have used in a month is 771 mb. I average 626
Over the past year the most texts I have used in a month is 797 and I average 620.
We definately use more text then actually make or use phoning minutes. Also the above data does not account for the "off network" data use from my wifi, which is A LOT. Probably easily tripple or quadruple the data amount.
I would consider myself (and other plan users) a high data user (overall with wifi and cellular). Moderate to higher text user and low phone minutes user.
Hope this helps you out Deep.
many companies like AT&T and VZW have changed to "unlimited talk/text" and you just pay for data tiers. So, text and minutes are moot.
I believe what Deep is asking is purely how much data to buy. usually available in 2GB increments.
agreed. Just wanted to be thourough and without knowing what or who he will be able to use, just wanted to give him a baseline. :)
my wife and I share 4GB and we never go over. We never get even close. We have Wifi at home and at work, so they only time we use data is on the train really.
monthly which ends today:
I just checked my usage and I am always under 2 gb each month. And honestly, I often turn off wi-fi because sometimes I think it's slower so it could be lower. The other two on my plan are always under 1 gb. As for minutes...we have 450 family for 3 phones (my husband's cousin is on our plan). We went over once when cool cuz was on vacation and talking to all his friends and relatives for 2 hours at a time. It was no big deal though because we had so many rollover minutes.
Now text messages I have went over before. I have 200/month and there have been a few months where the clan is texting 5 people at a time and that adds up quickly.
See Below. Just grabbed these screens showing the past few months. I have unlimited data so don't have my WIFI on, I don't really use the phone in the house however.
Also as I am out a lot with work and can be waiting for clients some times normally YouTube gets hammered
I will be using around 7G this month as my 'Month Start' is the 16th and I have already used 3gig
Thanks everyone. Good info. From what has been said, I figure 1-2 GB per phone is probably more than enough. Hotspots can give us stationary surfing like at home, a Donut shop or the airport.
0 bytes, dont own a cell phone. Never have would like to never will but thats seems less and less likely because of those meddling kids.
Deep, as a fellow Canukian, I have the following to add:
Like LB, Ms. Plato and I both use our cell phones as our primary numbers; we don't have a land line. We got 2 gigs of data through a sign up promo with Koodo, and we rarely ever even get close to 500mb, let alone 2Gb. That may be because we had a 500mb limit for years and we're still paranoid about risking running over. As we don't have a lot of choice up here in Canada, (and I've been with every cellphone company except Bell), so far Koodo has been the better one I've used. If you do go over your data limit, they charge you in $5 increments 500mb of data used over your limit. In theory, less bill shock.
If you're with Rogers, then it becomes a bit more of a concern, unless they've recently changed their data policies.
For straight up usage though, Ms.Plato and I are both light users. We don't stream anything when not on wifi; the extent of our data usage off wifi is viewing webpages (preferably the mobile versions) or using news apps.
We don't have a land line either, and 2gb per phone, and my boy (18 yr old) only once has gotten close to that, again, you tube at work, he rides shotgun and unloads ice at stops (good summer job before school!), so he's bored in the truck LOT, every day, but he has been shown how to track himself, and all is good now.
And these are I Phones, so there's a lot of usage for you tube, facebook, shopping, GPS, etc...2Gb is probably mre than adequate for all but the most ardent users. And of course, Church...
/off ignore
Sounds like that's a big waste of time. Better things to do.
My parents, brother and wife, and myself all share a 4gb plan and we haven't gone over yet. We are a family of contractors and real estate agents so we always are in the field. No land lines in any of the 3 houses. The only time we came close was a week at the beach together at the same time with no WiFi.
I must be a power data user. I have my phone set for wifi at home, work and family/friends houses. I am always going over 2g. Thankfully, I have an unlimited plan.
I would say you would only really need to worry about it, is if you tend to tether a comp and you are doing data (import/export) heavy work.
Or if you are Church and Blue Shield. Maybe lots of anime porn or midget porn?
That's so last year :-)
midget female wrestling porn is in this year...
