Suggestions on new dual band router

I couldn't find a tech equipment thread, so I thought I would post here and hopefully get some suggestions.

I'm looking to upgrade my Cisco Valey Plus with a new dual band router.   Any recommendations?

I just yesterday got a new dual band router.  I went with this Netgear one

It includes wireless-ac, but that's more of a future proof thing.

The Xbox support forums confirmed a few in this line of Netgear routers as working without issues and working with multiple consoles.

My experience with it has been positive and running two Xbox 360 consoles on wireless has no lag, which is in stark contrast to the previous modem+router solution I was using before.

edit: Here's the link for the Networking Hardware Information forums for Xbox 360.

This ^^^, if you do not want the AC version then have the N version for 50 bucks less. It is also called The Batman, so how could it not be awesome.

It is pricy, but it is supposed to be the tits and if I ever save the pennies, it will be the next one I get.

I've had this one for a year and I like it:

but it may be overkill for most users.  I'm a networking guy so yeah....

I have a Cisco at the house, pretty new, 4 months maybe, and it has started periodically shutting down and resetting itself, seemingly random. Thought it was perhaps over heating and resetting, not so sure now. Time to see about a return i feel.

You should not buy those ASUS routers if you plan on using multiple Xbox 360 consoles.

From the Xbox site I linked - the AC version says

Multiple Console Support

Confirmed No

*Because it will not consistently work without NAT issues*

And the 50 dollars cheaper one says

Multiple Console Support

Confirmed: No

The one Shadow linked is a higher tier version of the one I bought just a couple days ago.

I'd simply suggest doing research before this kind of purchase, such as reading Xbox's information on the routers before buying a router to use with an Xbox.

Actually that site does not list the N66u. It lists the N56. But a quick interweb search says SOME users experience a problem with the firmware. By getting to the firware ending in 246, people said that has stopped the issues.

I also did a search for the Linksys E4200 on that xbl site and the first posts says it does not work for multiple xboxes, then the next post says the original post is wrong and all you have to do if make sure the ports associated with xbl are open. Problem solved, in theory.

The people that are saying yes/no/works/doesn't work could be anyone, not necessarily network specialists. Case in point for the E4200 saying no, Eric Neustadter (also known as E or the Vowel) the operations manager for xbl live network uses the e4200 for his multiple xbox home and has also said the Asus router (N66u) are decent alternatives to his E4200. That E4200 was on sale at Xmas.

Anyway, what ever router you go with make sure the XBL ports are open.

It seems I misread it.  Thanks for the correction.

On the upside, I've never had a problem with the two XBoxes in the house...or the 4 computers, or the cell phones, or the laptop, or the Roku...

Oldschool - have you ever tried to play with both Xboxes signed into Live at the same time?  That's the issue we're talking about.  Both use the same router ports so it doesn't work well.

I use the Netgear WNDR3700 Dual Band Gigabyte Router.  It is an N600 router -- 300 mps on the 2ghz band and the same on the 5ghz band.  I have a desktop (ethernet wired), network printer (ethernet wired), laptop (wireless N), two smart TV's (wireless N), two smart home theater receivers (one wireless N, one with ethernet bridge to wireless N) and my 360 Slim (ethernet bridge to wireless N).  My 360 and living room home theater receiver are ethernet connected to a wireless bridge on the 5 ghz band.  All other wireless devices are using the 2ghz band.

I live in a condo, so the longest distance from router to device is about 30 feet and I am getting strong signal with that.  I did try the Netgear N900 and AC routers but was having problems with my laptop dropping connection -- may have been the laptop adapter, just don't know -- so I kept coming back to the N600 which is very reliable -- never has dropped a connection.

I have the E4200 and have never had a conflict between the boxes. Kids play BLOPS all the time while I'm on Forza. NP's, However the router itself seems to be having issues of late.

Nice.  Are you both gaming against other people online at the same time?

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.   I went with the Netgear R6250 and setup was a breeze.  So far no problems hooking up all of my wireless devices, and I've noticed a significant speed increase, especially with the devices I hooked into the 5 GHz channel.

Now I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade my Internet.   Currently I am paying for 18 MBps download/2 MBps upload for $45 and looking at either 25 MPS/2MBPS ($57) or 50 MPS/5 MBps ($89).  I wonder how noticable the increase would be from 18 to 25.

One benefit of the 50/5 is that it also comes with unlimited cloud storage, so I can dump my Carbonite account.

Well, I may not need to upgrade.   I ran speed tests using several different sites, and I was getting consistent numbers of over 24 Mbps download and almost 4 Mbps upload.  That seems pretty sufficient for general Internet use and online games.   Thanks for everyone's help!

Hi guys. My E4200 near as i can tell just crapped, 15 months old, dual band wireless , looks normal, just lays there and says it has a headache....sound familiar?

So, can someone recommend to me a robust unit that can handle at least 4 connections, 8 would probably be best....(?) 2 xboxes, 2 laptops, 2 PC's, a ROKU and at least three I-phones ... and that's with one boy off at UT.

Didn't we have a tech forum on the old site?   Maybe we should have one for the new site.   Admins?

I think Doodi is holding off putting time into any changes here, especially ones to splinter the forums more.

I got the R6300 to upgrade my WDNR3700 router and had issues with it, intermittent dropped connections with my laptops.  I also did not see an increase in range as was advertised.  I think the R6300 and older N wireless adapters may have compatibility problems.  Went back to the WDNR3700 and have had no problems.  300 mbs on each band should be plenty of bandwidth for most people.  Definitely for me.  I have two smart tvs, a smart Bluray player, two networked home theatre receivers, a desktop, an XBOX, and two laptops.  One thing I did was get a Linksys WES610N 4 port, dual band ethernet bridge to take advantage of the 5ghz band on the router.  I have the XBOX, one home theatre receiver, and the Bluray ethernet connected to the bridge.  The XBOX rips with a great connection!!

I have had the 3700 for over a year now and have absolutely no problems with it.

3700 is solid.  I got the 6300 because I had range issues with the 3700 but it didn't seem to help.  I kept it because I wanted to have AC wifi access for future devices.  Otherwise it works well - just didn't increase the range.

Well, the cable tech actually showed up Friday afternoon! I replaced the modem early Friday afternoon ( nice ride on the bike) and no improvement, and then the tech showed up and i had weak signal. We had removed our TV service prior and there were shunts to the two tv's no longer there and a splitter off the main line doing nothing, removed all these and it has improved. He's coming back out this Friday and running  anew line off the pole to the house and it should improve again.

What puzzles me is all this has been in place  for a while and now it acts up? maybe it's the Quality Engineer in me, but I really wanna know what changed?

The router itself seems to be fine but one of the laptops did seem to suffer wirelessly, maybe an older wireless card(?) but was fine hardwired. (temp situation, a friend over for some gaming) but ihe range is fine, have the Roku using the 300 in the far bedroom with no issues. This thing has 6 wireless and 4 hardwired, so it should be fine down the road for a bit.

slightly OT, but how do you like the Roku? I keep hearing people say its awesome. I'm just afraid everything I want on it will need a paid subscription. I'd love to have one for watching old B movies (and I see several channels listed for this). A lot of them say "free", but I heard after you DL them, to actually use them, there's a fee or subscription.

A lot of them are free trial versions. Honestly I use it most for Netflix and I already have that, so the Roku simply allows me to use the bedroom TV without running a hook up as it's wireless to the router. There are many other stations/channels, and I do watch a few B grade things that are free, they simply have maybe two to three commercial breaks in the course of a movie. Way less than regular TV does. But you have to dig through the channels to find them.

It's not a complete replacement for cable TV by any means, but I was only watching maybe two shows a week anyway and we stopped one day and said "why?"

I was thinking of getting one for the bedroom. I do have Netflix already, so it'd be nice to have that in there.

Thanks for the info :)

my setup at home is one of the more complex ones short of getting a patch rack.

Living Room:  Moto Surfboard > Netgear MCAB1001 MOCA adapter > Netgear R6300 wifi router > Trendnet green switch > Devices

Bedroom:  MOCA receiver > Trendnet green switch > devices & Asus EA-N66 dual band N450 repeater for my bedroom wireless.

Hard wired gaming to the bedroom off the same internet connection, over coax.  Also streams from our Tivo to our other Tivo without a hiccup.  Our bedroom was too far away for a wifi signal so I added in the access point.

So I'm going to be renting a house with my inlaws which is about 3000sq ft and 2 stories. Going to be a lot of wireless data so my old Linksys WRT54G is not going to cut it. There will be 2-3 xbox's, 4 laptops, and then smart phones and tablets.

I'm looking at these 2 routers.

Netgear AC1750

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122580

Linksy EA6500

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124470

http://store.linksys.com/Routers/Linksys-EA6500-App-Enabled-AC-Dual-Band...

I hate how they don't have the same specs listed. I know the Linksys has 3 antennass for each band, but I have no idea about the Netgear. They both have the same throughput and the same price so that just leaves out the other things such as how many antennas there are.
