So, I'm an old time X-Men fan, New Mutants was one of my first "big boy" series once I graduated from GI Joe and Transformers.  The X family has always been #1 for me.  As an OCD-completionist, I'm every comic-book shop's wet dream.  I dropped comics cold turkey out of college and been sucked back in once or twice since, each time I start with just a handfull of books and before I know it, I'm picking up at least a half dozen each week.  So, on to the point, after my latest hiatus (I think around the time the Avengers and X-Men really started to blur lines - which pissed me off to no end), I eventually realized my local library stocks TPBs.  Wanting to drop in on my old X-family and see how the follow-out from the whole House of M stuff came out, I ordered Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and Second Coming.  I really enjoyed Second Coming, and it started that "itch" back up.  But, it left me with a ton of questions (see below).  Just to give you an idea of my background, here's what I've got in my collection from Uncanny, you can assume I have the X-family books from the same time periods...

The Uncanny X-Men  #’s 223-227, 230, 232, 235, 237, 240-242, 249, 251&252, 260, 264&265, 270-272, 275, 277-340, 394-401, 429, 444-451   (you can see I have bailed out 3 major times)

Questions:

1) How did Layla Miller get back to our timeline after Messiah Complex?
2) Has Bishop been back since Messiah War?
3) Did Cable, Nightcralwer, or Magik get a "resurection?"
4) What had happened to Magneto prior to Second Coming?
5) Did Xavier have his powers in Second Coming?  Why didn't he participate (other than being nuetered by Cyclops)?
6) Why didn't Warlock help once the Nimrods started attacking?  Was he just spazzing out the whole time?

And moving forward:
7) What are the TPB's I just be looking for to fill in since Second Coming?
8) I think I read that Cyclops kindof went crazy and killed Proffesor X in a whole Phoenix Force crisis (I assume Hope related?) is that right?
9) Where can I read about the "Further Adventures of Hope Summers?"
10) What are the current Core X-Men books?
11) When was the last major "reset?"
12) When might the next "reset" occur?
13) What is the current status of the editorial direction of the X-Family?  Are we done mingling with Avengers?  Do they have a sound stable of writers and artists that developing the series in a meaningful way?

I think that might be it for now.  I may have more later.

PS - If we can get all that out of the way, I'd love to have a discussion on how the "Timeline" is understood, from within the Marvel X-Men world.

Thanks!

I'm a huge X-men fan, my favorite comic title and probably what led to my love of comics was reading the Claremont Uncanny X-Men series when I was a kid.  That said I haven't been crazy about how they've been handled in recent years and so my reading of it has been sporadic.  So I can only answer a few of these questions.

1. Don't know.

2. I know Bishop was the bad guy in the Cable series which takes place right after Messiah War (I think).  Not sure what happened to him or where he's been since.

3. Cable is alive and kicking in the Cable and X-Force series currently.  Magik is currently on Cyclops' team of X-men, she was also one of the Phoenix Five in the Avengers vs X-men event.  Sadly, Nightcrawler has yet to be ressurected.  There was an Age of Apocalypse version of him that crossed over into the main universe during the Uncanny X-force series.  I think he may have gone back to his dimension though.

4. Not sure, don't recall.

5. Don't recall that series well enough.

6. No idea.

7. So many different titles I'm not sure off-hand what you'd need to read to get up to speed.  Probably a lot.

8. Yup.

9. I believe the Cable series after Messiah War involved Cable and Hope time-hopping and her growth/training.  Now she appears in Cab;le and X-force, at least for the few issues of it I read.

10. X-men (recently launched, up to issue 4 now)

All-New X-men (involves the young original 5 X-men transported to the current timeline)

Wolverine and the X-men (Logan heads up the school training some new mutants)

Uncanny X-Men (Cyclops, Emma, Magneto, Magik, etc.  bascially renegades after the Phoenix Five fiasco)

Uncanny Avengers (a mutant based Avengers team, ties in a lot with the Uncanny X-force series by the same writer)

There's also Cable and X-force, Uncanny X-force vol.2, X-men Legacy, X-Factor, ummm... maybe another title or two.  Heh, Too many to keep track of.

11. Avengers vs X-men ending was the catalyst for the most recent title shake-ups and relaunches.

12. Who can say?  When the next movie comes out or the next big Marvel event?

13. Kind of a clusterfuck in the Marvel Universe right now.  Wolverine's on like 6 teams and has multiple books, the Avengers and X-men are still mingling...  Bendis writes 2 X-books, not a big fan of his work though, Remender did great work on Uncanny X-force and currently with Uncanny Avengers, can't speak for the other series too well.  The art teams are stellar on some books, not so much on others.  All-New X-men has had great art up until the latest issue.  X-Men 1-3 with Coipel on pencils is great.  Uncanny X-men has Bachalo (not a fan) and Irving (love his work) switching off every few issues.

Hope that helps....

My main suggestion is read Avengers vs. X-Men, that's what started all these new X-Men and Avenger relaunches. It changed a lot in the Marvel Universe, and so far has been the premise of everything in the X-Men series.

1. Layla's return is kinda complicated to explain at least for me honestly. She escapes the camp during the "Summer's Rebellion" arc so I'd suggest starting there. There's a crap ton of more time-travel and it got really confusing honestly. Then she hooks up with Doom, and then eventually starts living with him for a long time, and then I remember she was supposed to get married, but the priest got murdered. I sold my collection of that arc so I can't reference

2. Bishop has been back! He is currently in the new series reboot "Uncanny X-Force", it features: Puck, Storm, Psylocke, Spiral, Fantomex, and someone else I can't remember. Bishop's got all these new powers and is crazy insane powerful, really evil,, and no one could figure out what was up with him, and he's kicking everyone's ass. I got a few back issues I'm trying to catch up on, so they may have figured it out by now, not sure.

3. Cable did and has his own series "Cable and the X-Force" and is pretty good, Nightcrawler is dead, but is coming back in a month or so in a new X-Men series can't remember the name, and Magik is back rescued by Pixie in Second Coming I believe it was, and is with Scott Summer's X-Men in the title Uncanny X-Men.

4. Prior to 2nd Coming? That's a lot of history there, do you have something more specific? but Magneto is actually now pretty powerless as are a lot of mutants due to the AvX arc, they haven't figured out why, but it was something to do with the Pheonix Force.

5. Xavier, as much as I remember didn't have much to do with Second Coming at all, I barely remember seeing him. He had his powers up untill Scott killed him. Actually The Red Skull removed his brain from his dead body and implanted his telepathic abilities into his own brain and is now trying to destroy mutantkind.

6. Warlock  just wasn't shown much at all after he killed all the Smileys. I mean let's face it, comics often leave loose ends.

7. There's a few big ones to pick up, but the biggest is to collect AvX, from there everything got relaunched, and they're just now starting to release TPB on the first arcs. So far, not much has been happening, it's actually being hammered by critics for not moving forward, but they just started the big "Battle of the Atom" arc, and is supposed to tie all the series together and finish the arc, leading to a new one. It involves numerous X-Men teams from like 5 timelines all meeting, all lying to each other, it's a huge fucking mess honestly lol. They really want people buying all 7 series to tie-it all together.

8. Yes, the Phoenix returns to Earth, she start taking over mutants, and while possessed by the Phoenix, Scott kills Xavier. Hope has really been put on the backburner lately. In AvX ppl thought she'd be important, but ends up not being so important at all. She's only in Cable and the X-Forcenow , and is pretty much told by Cable constantly to just go home and live a normal life, and to not get involved in mutant affairs and fighting. She's starting to ignore him, but it hasn't fleshed out yet.

9.Do you mean current titles?

10. Current Core Books: Wolverine and the X-Men, All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny Avengers, X-Men(All female cast), Cable and the X-Force, Uncanny X-Force. Thee's also lots, and lots of other non-core titles like X-Men Legacy based on Xavier's son Legion.  A new X-Men series starts soon, and Marvel has a few more planned soon as well. Yes, these all tie-in to each other..... Marvel is really stretching your money now.

11. The last major reset was this past year, that's when Marvel relaunched everything following "AvX" almost everything was reluanched and changed around like Peter Parker's death, and Spidey is now Doctor Octopus

12. Marvel does not have any reset planned for the near future. I have the most current issue of Marvel Previes they give to dealers showcasesing up to Febuary's issues, and nothing has been "reset".

13. Currently Marvel has 3 phases for movies: Avengers was the end of Phase 1. Next is the new Thor movie, then Captain America, then next is either X-Men: Days of Future Past(By Brian Singer again!) or Guardians of the Galaxy(This upcoming Summer), then Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron, they're also working on a new Fantastic Four Reboot, Ant-Man, and a rumored Doctor Strange.

If you read my Pull List topics(haven't done them in about a month or so) you can see pretty much everything I subscribe to, which is pretty much every title Marvel and DC release, so I can inform you of something you might want to know, since I've been following everything. Even the crappy Gambit series......

Have you caught up yet, Hammerdrake?  I've been trying to catch up through reading Wikipedia and getting comics at the library (thankfully here in San Diego, the library system has a great selection of TPB's).  I've been looking for others to discuss Battle of the Atom with, since it's my first X-event I'm following as it's happening.  See thread:
