discs = always less convenient after the initial download.

haha nope, though I have a Harmony One that does everything.  I'm more interested in having all games on all my boxes at once, and no game case storage (saves space in a condo).  Plus load times!

I do have to say it will be cool to use the voice control via the x1 to load any game without disc swap.  I use the kinect now to control Amazon Instant video and it is convenient, but to be able to switch games and stuff will be cool.  Not a deciding factor, but convenient.  Me = lazy

As long as consumers are willing to pay the same price for digital versions of games versus the disc versions, why would any game publisher lower the price?

I have preordered the disc version of BF4 for the One. For Ghost, I am hoping to use the Game Ahead program and get a digital copy for both the 360 and One for just $10 more.

I link downloads, but they are going to take forever. Just have to plan ahead and hopefully we can preload. That's a nice feature I like on steam.

they're not going to take that long . Like I said before, "normal" Comcast downloads at about 10GB/hour.

So now add potentially 40 more gigs to that for a built from scratch for next gen exclusive.  I probably couldn't have downloaded 5 gigs in 40 minutes personally.  At 10 megabit, 5 gigs should take 1h6m to download with no loss due to overhead or other slowdowns.  A 45 gig download would take 10 hours at 10 megabit with the same assumptions.  For comparison, the AVERAGE broadband speed in the USA is 8 megabits currently.

They would lower the price if they really wanted to promote this as the 'next gen way'.  Same reason they give promos if you use the self check-out machiens at stores when they first go in.  They give you financial incentive to modify your behavior.

But you do have a point, if gamers would stop behding over and letting publishers fuck them in the ass, we could change the industry for the better.  There was a glimmer of hope when gamers in large banded together and told Microsoft where they could shove their next-gen policies and PS4 pre-orders went through the roof.  If we got that same kind of participation on the savings not being passed on to consumers for buying the downloaded version, we'd see positive change.  You know the devs aren't seeing any more money for the download version vs the retail package, all you're doing is feeding the publishers pockets.  I could feel better about it if the end devs got something out of it because they're the ones who put all their blood sweat and tears into it, but I doubt they even see a penny more per sale of download vs retail.

Average download speed for me is anywhere from 32-36mbps. Still seems slow at times...

I'm on DSL and my hampster can only generate 3 mbps. I feel like I will be forced into "upgrading" my internet from AT&T to Charter since it's the only other option in my area with a faster speed. Simply downloading a 360 game is a long, drawn-out affair, I can't imagine how awful it will be trying to do a 40 GB game at my slow speed.

Still, I'm inclined to do more downloads. I just find having games already downloaded on my console is so much more of a convenience than having the clutter of disk cases. If discounts were to be had for downloading vs. store purchase, that would be icing on the cake.

My PC will peg my connection but if I am only pulling 2 mb from the site I am downloading from then it really doesn't mean shit.

At least the new consoles should be able to handle doing a couple things at once better than the last gen.

games are not going to be 45GB.  They're just not.  I'm talking about GB size over the net, not any extraction/decompression at installation.

Very good point.

But even if the game is 5-10 gb compressed, if the servers are not ready to handle the load it could take forever.

I hope they have made the investment to handle this load.  Shit look back at the prime of COD, when a DLC came out it would take forever to download at 8pm est.

The other item is the bandwidth of the consoles should be larger.  The 360 is 7-8 year old.  I think the max DL speed on the 360 is something like 2-5mb. I cant remmebr the actual number but it is low if i am remembering it correctly.

the 360 had a 10/100mb connection.  the real restriction was live.  and the same happens on steam when a new AAA title comes out.  the real ristirciton will always be the server. And dont forget your ISP.  They defintely like to throttle bandwidth.

I'm hoping since they prefer the system to be "always online" you should be able to do things like preorder and preload, or preorder and it'll start downloading automatically at midnight.  Or, buy something on your phone on Smart Glass at work and it starts downloading immediately - things like that.

@Grex : Your 360 actually has a gigabit connection .  But that's irrelevant, the speed of your interent connection is what matters and although it is possible to get gigabit internet connections these days, that would be pretty l33t and freak'in expensive.  As I posted earlier, the average broadband connection in the USA is 8 megabit.

@Shadow : Yes compression will bring the transfer size of the game down some.  But you're essentially transferring an ISO image, you're not going to see 50% compression and even if you were, it would be still in the neighborhood of 20gb.  I'm not sure how relivant this is but I downloaded Guild Wars 2 last night because I got a free code from IGN.  It was a 16gb download and it takes 16gb on my HDD.  So not any transfer compression savings there.  Also I recently downloaded Path Of Exile from Steam and didnt see any transfer compression savings there either.

I think this is why they're spinning split downloads as a feature, but really it's their bandaid solution to the transfer speed issue.  You can download the single player or multiplayer parts of the game to get you gaming faster.  And on top of that, they could download game content in sequence so if you pick single player download first, it'll let you start playing once all the content for the first level / section  is downloaded.  So there are ways they're looking at hiding the fact that it's going to take say 10 hours to download the entire game.  It's been confirmed that Killzone on PS4 IS a 45gig download which is a next gen exclusive title, it's the PS4's showcase title.

So...where do you buy the digital versions of games anyway??? The Xbox marketplace? I would have assumed that Call of Duty: Ghosts would show up there by now with a "coming soon" note or something?

Supposedly instead of the $10 disc trade-in you can do a $70 dual digital license but I can't tell where this is even available?? (Besides Wal-Mart and I won't shop there!).

The dual digital license for Ghost is only avaiolable at Wallmart for the US.  I dont shop there either.  If it was on amazon I would have switched my preorder in a second.

Found this as well - http://news.xbox.com/2013/09/games-call-of-duty-upgrade

From the link:

Players can also purchase a digital version of "Call of Duty: Ghosts" directly from the Xbox Live Marketplace for a suggested retail price of $59.99. And, when ready to upgrade to Xbox One, you can purchase a digital Xbox One version of "Call of Duty: Ghosts" for a suggested retail price of just $10 on the Xbox Live Marketplace until March 31, 2014.

yeah I hear you Tank.  We'll have to wait and see I guess.

if games are truly 37GB to download, that'll take me about 4 hours.  But I hear they may offer preinstalls like Steam.  Either way you could start your download at midnight worst case scenario, and then it's ready when you wake up.

I think if they want to compete with physical sales, they'll need to let you pre-load the game days before release so it's there ready to go at midnight of launch day.  If they make it so you can't buy/start downloading until midnight, then it's going to be faster for most people who want to start playing as soon after launch as possible to just go to the store and get the physical disc.

depends on the audience that really must play games at midnight on launch.  That probably is mostly 18-24 range that are old enough to do midnight launches but not too old to have 40 hour 9-5 work weeks.  I'm pretty much past the point of needing to play a game at midnight for 1 hour before I have to go to bed.  And I'm only 32.

I don't see them worry too much about that.  Getting digital and all the convenience that comes with it is a much larger benefit in the long run than playing a game a few hours early, at least to me.  However, they've said they will probably do the pre-load thing later on, so best of both worlds.

I did the PS4 AC, Ghosts upgrade to next gen. Seems I need to put the PS3 version of either game in the PS4 for start up even though they are both going to be downloaded to the system.
