How do you install a new HDD into PS4 ???

Okay I know this would have been a whole lot easier if I went and bought a better hard drive for the PS4 before it actually came out on November 15th, because the setup would have been easy.

However I have my PS4 working great and have several games installed onto the 500GB HDD, my question to anybody out there is how to swap for a better hard drive and not lose your data?? besides the upgrade HDD, so you need to purchase an external hard drive to transfer everything over from the PS4 to it, and exactly how is that performed.

I just happened to see some great deals on hard drives that can be inserted into a PS4, and the fact that a lot of these games are taking a lot of drive space amkes me wonder if upgrading now would be a very smart idea, for instance I saw this particular drive on Amazon today:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B99JUBQ/ref=pe_171630_72920000_em_1p...

I honestly don't know anything about laptop hard drives, let alone upgrading the PS4, so can a total noob do this??? also is there better and affordable drives available??? should I go higher than 1 TB or is that sufficient???

Would appreciate any information and incite from ya fellas, thanks!!!

You need to grab the full boat firmware from Sony, I think it's about 900mb and a usb flash drive to put it on. I don't think you can backup the current data on the system besides the game saves. Luckily psn is pretty fast and stable now.

A couple folks around here are using that drive (that you linked, the video is using an expensive ssd - same process) and seem pretty happy with it btw.

I was looking around the XMB -> Settings menu last night and there is an option to backup to a USB drive, pretty sure that includes local saves as well.

I'd check that out.

Anyone have any experience swapping in an SSD?  Noticed any significant performance improvements?

Okay the SSHD from Amazon came in, I ended up purchasing the

Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014

and I downloaded the PS4 firmware unto a USB flashdrive; however I'm wondering if I need to purchase a USB drive capable of holding at least 500GB of data in order to save everything, such as game saves, etc; or by going under the "Settings" option, and go to storage filing, there's the option to transfer data to the Cloud Service, I have absolutely no idea if that's simply for all game data, which is what needs to be done.

I mean installing the actual drive and following the steps in the video is easy to comprehend, and regaining my PSN account is a no brainer. I just wondering if any of you fellas have recently put in a new drive after playing with your PS4 for a little while and have data saved????

Any further information would be deeply appreciated. Thanks

I don't think there is a backup utility for the entire system. Just backup the game saves. You're going to be dl'ing and installing from games discs like a fresh system it looks like.

settings -> Application saved data management -> saved data in system storage -> copy to USB storage Device

I bet that step isn't really needed since all your saved data goes into the cloud anyway. Can't be too carefull so I'd do it anyway.

Yeah, I can't seem to find when the cloud saves will upload.  With the PS3 you could specify a time of day to upload.  That doesn;'t seem to be the case on the PS4.

I'd strongly suggest copying the saves to USB before the drive replacement just to be sure.

I haven't installed my yet, because besides backing up all your saved game data onto a USB Flash Drive ( the PS4 will not recognize an external USB Drive); now I'm curious as to how any DLC or Season Passes, etc, that were purchased on the Playstation Store are recovered??

Does the console do this automatically??? is this information stored on the Cloud?? because I have the Premium Editon of BF4, and received quite a bit of stuff for purchasing the Collector's Edition of AC4: Blag Flag, and said what the hell and purchased the season pass for that game, so I really don't want to lose those things when I upgrade the HDD.

I know there is a record of everything downloaded to the system under the "Notifications" setting on the toolbar, so it could be as easy as going there and just re-downloading everything?? but if anyone knows the answer, would love how it's done. Right now PSN is shutting down for maintenance, so tomorrow sounds like a better day to perform the installation of the new 1TB SSHD that I picked up.

Everything you have dl'd gets saved in a list viewable in the psn store. Go through it and select what you want to re-dl. You don't have to buy that stuff again, just redownload it.

Is there any easier way to copy over everything you have downloaded to the stock PS4 drive to a new one?

No.

On the ps3 there is a full system backup that you can use for the same machine. That backup will only work on that particular ps3. There is nothing like that yet for the ps4 but I hope it comes in a fw patch by the time I'm ready to upgrade my hdd.

Well the new drive is installed, the only real hard part for me was getting the bloody plastic cover off my PS4; I swear to God it was glued on, wouldn't budge at all, had to wiggle it very gently to coax it to start to loosen up.

The actual physical installation of the drive took less then 5 minutes, if that at all, and I wasn't presented options while in safe mode, the system just started to install the firmware automatically for me, installing my games from the disc was super fast, it actually took longer re-installing everything that was digital. The only bad thing that happened is I somehow damaged the optical cable for my new Turtle Beach PX4 Headset, because the PS4 doesn't even recognize it at all, and the bloody thing was working fine prior to installing the new hard drive, so that sucks, just going have to get a replacement directly from the company to resolve the issue.

Okay a few want to know if I've had any sort of problems with my PS4 since upgrading the hard drive to the new 1TB Seagate model; I'm happy to report it runs like a dream and is just as quiet as the original 500GB HDD that's inside the system. Also don't know how he did it, but my younger brother fixed my PX4 headset last night, so that's working too !!!

I ended up putting a 500gb SSD in.  Install went smooth - no issues.  Definitely running very nicely now. :)

I swear to God, everytime I order anything from Amazon, they send me an email asking me if I would be interested in a better Hard Drive than what I already purchased (LOL), all of a sudden they have a 2TB version of a drive similiar to the one I purchased, but they also were offering me a discount on a 1TB Samsung Solid State Hard Drive, for the lovely cost of $360.00 (might have been more), but I don't think a SATA III laptop drive will work in the PS4, then again I could be wrong; but I'm certainly not paying anything close to $400.00 for a HDD for a game system.

Sata is backwards compatible. You could put a sata III drive in a ps3 (ps3 is sata I). SSD would be nice for the speed and keep the heat down but is just too much money for me right now.

That is a pretty good price for that drive with that capacity.

Add me to the list.  I just put in a 1TB Seagate.  So easy to do..  I decided to just redownload everything instead of backing it all up and restoring.

Next up will be to put the old PS4 500 drive into my launch PS3 that currently has a 250 gig drive in it.

I've noticed some significant increases in speed; depending upon the game your playing, and I like Distortion's idea of taking the 500GB that came with the PS4, and installing it inside of my PS3, which has a 40GB HDD (just a wee bit of increase in storage capacity)

Yeah it sort of breathed new life into my launch unit (although it had a 250 gig drive in it that was full).  Bad news is apparently the backup process of the PS3 doesn't include game downloads, just saves and game data.

That's not how it worked for me. It backed everything up. (games/saves/partial downloads/the whole enchilada)

Hm, that's weird.  Maybe I should switch the drives back and try it all again.  Redownloading all this stuff is going to take forever.  So far I've been lazy and only put BLOPS 2 and God of War Ascencion on there.  Would love to not have to redownload all that crap.

The way I did it was to create a new user, say 'backup' and do the backup from that user. When doing the restore, create a user called 'restore' and restore the image. Then delete the 'backup' and 'restore' users. IIRC there was an error I ran into that it wouldn't restore user files while being logged on as that user. I could be talking out of my ass, it's been a loooong time since I created a backup on ps3.
