Great read!

I caught this article this evening by a writer over at Race Department about next gen games and how the devs are persuaded by the communities feedback...blah blah

but an excellent read with video proof that a race car is not hard to drive fast as some simmers make it out to be

Nice read. I think an issue that is sometimes touched on, though not in this article, is sim racers do one thing in sim cars they would never do in a real one...or the ones who are still alive anyway, rather than build up to the limit of the car, they come from the other direction. In real life you are not going to set off foot to the floor, throwng the car into corners with gay abandon. No you will slowly build your speed, learning lap by lap from the feel of the car where you can push a little more. In a sim many folk first come off on every other corner to start, and then pull back. Try that in a real car and your dead, or looking at a huge repair bill. Then complain there is no grip.

Sure a real car is easier, there is so much more feedback, so much more information. In sim we have to rely on driving in a sense half blind, the world we are in is not truely three dimentional, the physical feel of that seat of the pants is missing, no G-forces. What we feel through the wheel is an interpritation not mecanical.

Also the top racers are a breed apart, both in sim and in real life, also not all racers are great in all cars. Yet in sim some people think they should be able to drive every car like a pro. I know I am best in FWD, I can compete and even beat drivers that humiliate me in RWD, I am better in less powerful cars. I could blame the sim, but it makes sense to me. I have only ever driven FWD in real life, so can do a better job of taking that vastly reduced physical feedback and make it work.

Excellent read! I was mentioning to Knight on TS last week about how I found driving the M3 GTR on Assetto Corsa far too easy compared to other sims I had played. Quite possibly a victim of the artificial difficulty mentioned? Though I must say that article does hint of criticism of iracing's physics model and couldn't agree more.

Very good read that came at a good time for me and opened my eyes a bit after somewhat bashing the latest Dtm experience which I thought was a bit easy.  I realized I have no idea what these cars feel like and what Chris harris described his experience of a heavy downforce feel and not being able to feel the front end was similar to my experience I went on to watch an onboard lap of brands hatch with the pro describing how the car was reacting in each corner and that's exactly what was happening ingame to a T. All of which most the testers were bitching about lol so I've learnt my lesson leave the driving experience to the pros and just look for the bugs :)

Seems I was right since he gave this brutally frank (but true imo ) review of iracing. http://www.racedepartment.com/2013/04/iracing-review/

Another great read!

theres not 1 comment in there I would disagree with!

Yes it's clearly the best oval NASCAR game available.

the worst road car physics of any game which gets little to no attention

i feel they have the best detailed tracks of any game and the organized racing was fantastic and was honestly the only reason I played it as little as I did cause there was no one to race with in other sims....which I really missed coming from consoles where I could run up to 10 races a night at any time to being lucky to 1-2 a week in other pc sims.

but the insane price was the last nail in the coffin and finally choose to let my membership expire a few weeks backs and what hurts the most I have nothing to show for all the hundreds of dollars I spent over the past yr.   it's really is like a pity money pit....keep paying to use your rental content....or don't pay and loose your hundreds of invested dollars.

If they allowed you to use your content offline while your membership is expired I wouldn't feel so negative about it but since they don't offer this I feel it's a rip/scam

still tho it's a great game they just need to give the road cars the same love they give the ovals and allow you to use your content when ever slash the cost  and then maybe I'll consider coming back.....but till than no thanks!

The only thing that does confuse me is this, all sims have their pet pros, all these pro's add their input and say when they think it is right...So...Why don't all the cars in all the sims feel the same? Riddle me that.

Then there is this comment

Many of you will know that Base Performance Simulators runs rF1 as a training tool for up and coming and established racing drivers. I was invited back there today for a charity event in aid of the Allan Simonsen Memorial Fund. Had massive amounts of fun and competitive laps in the single seater simulator and the GT sim too with some pro drivers and am drivers. Anyway, huge amounts of praise for the way that rF1 models the physics. Can only imagine the reaction to rF2. So well done ISI and keep it getting even more real.

All this tells me we all have equal input, the output will always be a compromise. It's that compromise that makes up the difference, each sim compromising in a different way, none right absolutely, and we pick the compromise that suits us.

Like you said pet pros :)

Which all come from different race series and all have different setup preferences.  Iam pretty sure if redbull and marussia swapped rides there would be some disagreements on setup leading to different feedback of how the car  feels.  it's like the conversation we had about how other guys rigs would feel to one another.  I don't care what dev teams claim there connections are anymore or what boat the fan boys are jumping on I pick my games based on this.....

content...biggest factor!  you can claim to have the best physics and data but without content I enjoy it's all for nothing

Championship series for offline racing......ATM nothing annoys me more than only being given 1 car per class

touring cars are a must....iam thankful for mods as they allow me to race cars that are not available in the game, but there just not as good as base content and who knows where the core and tm derived from

visuals and sounds must be top notch.....physics I want to see that the dev team has worked with an actual driver of the series to replicate its experience

ffb doesn't have to be the greatest and feel the molding between every cobblestone...I just need  a road connection, tire flex and sense of braking all the rumbling comes through my buttkicker.

If taking tire data and inputting it into a computer and having it work perfectly it would be easier said than done.....for now it's data based on personal opinions and feedback

after reading this I realized that simcades meet my needs more than the majority of popular sims lol

Well Tire data is so much more complicated than that, most certainly not data based on opinion but materials modeling, and yeah you have sim vibe...I don't. so right there is a difference in needs. Offline series meh, not really interested so heh another difference. There will never be a one sim fits all and we never...or rarely agree on what is important to us. Nowt wrong with that, as long as we continue to have fun on track together. I will invest in those other sims when they offer a full experience, day/night weather, online, probably not any that go with the paid DLC thing though...Mind I say that LOL

I do agree with what you said about iRacing...Said the same myself, and then was sucked into another year. But I refuse to spend another penny on rented content, that is taking the piss as far as I am concerned. No Offline mode? So many times I have logged into practice and been unable to.

FFB is more than feeling every cobble, it needs to communicate at least some of those cues that are missing from the experience, and that for me is right up there as the number one. But it so sooo complicated by all the different wheel set ups out there. Can it possibly feel right on all of them?

If we ever find a sim we both agree is THE ONE...I will eat my rig LOL
