Installing a new HDD into a PS4 (Garfy needs help)

Alrighty, I went out and got myself a good deal on the following:

Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014

and of course it would have been much easier to physically install it and then use the PS4 firmware 1.5 to update, when I first got my new system, but unfortunately I didn't do that.

So my big question is, the PS4 has a cloud storage service, will that back up all my game saves so far and all the added content either purchased or through redeaming codes??? or should I purchase a portable USB drive that can hold at least 500 GB like the PS4 to transfer all my data over, and if so, what is a good brand to buy???

I just don't want to bugger up my PS4, but lets face it, the 500GB harddrive that came included with the console is going to fill up quickly with the size of some of the installation files for these games.

Any information or help would be deeply appreciated. I already have the 1.5 firmware update on a USB flashdrive, so it's just a question of what are the next steps to take.

I believe your saves are on the cloud. You'll have to re download any games your purchased.

Yes, there is cloud storage for your saves. My Killzone Shadowfall single player save was corrupted so I went looking through the settings and I found the backup save from the cloud and redownloaded it to my HDD.

Thanks everyone for all the help; just confirms what I need to do first, and that's purchasing a portable USB Drive in order to back up everything.

Something like this is all you need:

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Flash-Drive-SDCZ36-016G-AFFP/dp/B00...

The save files aren't that large.  I think the max space PS+ gives you for cloud storage is 2 Gig anyway.

And you'd still have room for the ~ 1 Gig OS load from Sony for the new drive.

Got my new drive in last night, wow this thing is fast.  Very easy to upgrade and very impressed with load times and overall performance.

Did you have any issues doing it after the fact instead of when the PS4 was just out of the box? What process did you have to take?

Had only one issue, AC4 locked up when first run with the new drive in.  After rebooting system no problems since.  Games start so fast now its crazy.

Backed up game saves to usb just in case.  Didnt need the usb as saves were in the cloud.

Removed drive then installed new one.

Started system in safe mode.  Ran full software update (800MB) version.

Installed games then downloaded saves from the cloud.

I think it took maybe 30 minutes.

I haven't installed my yet, because besides backing up all your saved game data onto a USB Flash Drive ( the PS4 will not recognize an external USB Drive); now I'm curious as to how any DLC or Season Passes, etc, that were purchased on the Playstation Store are recovered??

Does the console do this automatically??? is this information stored on the Cloud?? because I have the Premium Editon of BF4, and received quite a bit of stuff for purchasing the Collector's Edition of AC4: Blag Flag, and said what the hell and purchased the season pass for that game, so I really don't want to lose those things when I upgrade the HDD.

I know there is a record of everything downloaded to the system under the "Notifications" setting on the toolbar, so it could be as easy as going there and just re-downloading everything?? but if anyone knows the answer, would love how it's done. Right now PSN is shutting down for maintenance, so tomorrow sounds like a better day to perform the installation of the new 1TB SSHD that I picked up.

Dude...

You are making this way more complicated than it actually is.   smiley

Your data is backed up to PS+ automatically.  Go get a thumbdrive like the one I posted in the link earlier in this thread, $10 for 16 Gig, I'm sure you can get them cheaper, too.  You can copy save data to the flash drive from the system menus, too.  You'll need the new system image on the thumbdrive so you can format the new hard drvive.

Yes, it's really as easy as going to your downloads list and re-downloading the DLC/Season Passes/Bonuses.  This ain't Microsoft we're dealing with.   wink

I have a Samsung 16 GB thumb drive (for saving game files), so that's not a problem, and also a SONY 16GB thumb drive containing the firmware update, and now that I know you can locate and re-install stuff from the Playstation Store, then I should be all good to go installing the new drive into the PS4 tomorrow.

Definitely will let you know how I made out, as for Microsoft, my XBOX ONE crashed on me, but to be totally honest the bloody thing acted funny from day one that it was brought home, so I had my buddy from EB GAmes give me a full replacement on Saturday, and all I had to do was re-install the games like I will have to do with the PS4, but everything was saved to their cloud service, including my game saves, so I didn't lose a thing; and now after getting advice from all you fellas, I don't have to worry about things on the PS4 as well.

Well the new drive is installed, the only real hard part for me was getting the bloody plastic cover off my PS4; I swear to God it was glued on, wouldn't budge at all, had to wiggle it very gently to coax it to start to loosen up.

The actual physical installation of the drive took less then 5 minutes, if that at all, and I wasn't presented options while in safe mode, the system just started to install the firmware automatically for me, installing my games from the disc was super fast, it actually took longer re-installing everything that was digital. The only bad thing that happened is I somehow damaged the optical cable for my new Turtle Beach PX4 Headset, because the PS4 doesn't even recognize it at all, and the bloody thing was working fine prior to installing the new hard drive, so that sucks, just going have to get a replacement directly from the company to resolve the issue.

Good to hear Garf.  I'm starting to doubt my choice in the hard drive I chose.  The fan is on way more now than it used to be.  I understand its a 7200 rpm drive so things heat up but I miss the quite PS4 before the HD upgrade.  Let me know how your new drive does in case of noise as I might be switching drives if this keeps up.

Okay a few want to know if I've had any sort of problems with my PS4 since upgrading the hard drive to the new 1TB Seagate model; I'm happy to report it runs like a dream and is just as quiet as the original 500GB HDD that's inside the system. Also don't know how he did it, but my younger brother fixed my PX4 headset last night, so that's working too !!!

Well, looks like the drive is performing ok.  Not sure what happened but it has been running pretty quite for awhile now.  Garf, glad to hear you are up and running again.  I thought the system was fast before the upgrade but wow these new drives take it to another level.

So your drive is not running the fans as much as before there Landser??? I wonder what was causing the issue in the first place???

As for myself, I am more than happy with my purchase on the new SSHD, it runs super quiet, and definitely notice the speed difference when loading up a game; now if I was able to afford that fancy 1TB SSD Drive by Samsung, I would definitely have purchased one and put it inside my PS4, but I can't complain with my Seagate.

After reading this thread, I purchased that Seagate and installed it in my PS4. Wow! Talk about a world of difference in performance. Good recommendation, Garfy.

For those on the fence, I highly recommend getting this drive for the PS4.

Now if you got money to spend and want a real bad ass HDD for your spiffy new PS4; here's what Amazon sent me an email today, in regards that I might want to purchase:

Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE1T0BW

by Samsung

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7TE1T0BW/...

Hey it's only $529.99 in price; but I bet the performance speeds are outrageous

But the HDD that I have in my PS4 right now, actually happens to be on sale for $99.00 for anyone that has been contemplating upgrading their systems HDD.
