Headset

Hi all, I'm looking at getting my first headset for the xbox360 and x1.  Anyone have any recomendations?  I know there is an adapter that will be coming out for the X1 so I'm prepared to get that when its available.

So far I've been looking at the Turtle Beach 510 and the Astro A50's.  Would be awesome if anyone owns either of these headsets could let me know what they think.

Thanks in advance.

I love the A50's.  I had the A40s for years and finally upgraded to A50s for wireless (other than controller cable).  Will never go back.  Great sound, great talkback (from your mic to hear yourself).  However, pricy.  I had the TB x41's and they were decent as well for much less money.  However, I'd get static a lot in my ears.

At this point I'd wait, honestly.  I think by summer new headphones that are made for the new consoles will come out.

The astros are 5.8ghz and 7.1 surround sound.

The Turtles use a dual band wifi signal and auto-scans for a free frequency rather than being locked at say 5.8ghz.  Unfortuniatly i can't find a concrete answer on if they're 5.1 or 7.1 .  Everything just says dolby digital surround sound, I'm specifically looking for doby digital EX to out it as a 7.1 system or for something to say it's 7.1 but haven't found that answer in 10 minutes of looking.  so you'll have to put your own time in to answer that question further.

You're going to find people who say turtles are better than astros and others who will say astros are better than turtles.  I'll say this, Turtle Beach has more experience with wireless, they've developed multiple generations of wireless gaming headsets by this point.  I have owned Trittons and Turtles, currently I'm using a set of Turtles that was available around this time last year and they've been great.  Very comfortable to wear for long periods.  Battery drain is acceptable and sound quality is great.  If you really want to dig into them, you can mess with the sound to boost footsteps and what not to give you better situational awareness.  I can't offer any personal experienc ewith astros because it took them too long to get a wireless set out, i'd already gone Turtles by then.

Sounds on TB vs. Astro (I've owned both wireless) - Astro sounds better with zero static.  However, as stated - they're a lot more expensive to check out.  Might want to start with a lower set of TB's and see if you like them, first.

Also, TB's (at least most) use regular AAA batteries which you can swap on the fly rather than Astros' built in battery that you have to plug in to charge.  You can still use them while they charge, but it's a pain.  However, Astros last about 8 hours or so between charges and if you plug them in when done you'll probably be fine.

Fit-wise:  TB's are mostly On-ear and can hurt after awhile.  Astros are around-ear so they don't push on your earlobes, which is nicer.

I've asked before, I think.

Do I understand correctly that the Turtle Beach XO SEVEN are wireless directly to the XB1? As opposed to having its own wireless transceiver, hooked up via Optical cable or HDMI?

It would seem be be an advantageous situation over having its own stand alone transceiver.

I think I see the source of my confusion. Turtle Beach is not listing all of the contents yet, since the product has not been released.

No because they're made to be cross-used with the 360 OR One.

I can't ever see that being the case, the ONE would need to have a wireless audio transmitter inside of it for that to be the case and it doesn't.  And as Shadow mentioned already, being cross compatible with 360 would seem to confirm that's the case.

I think bluetooth can be used to transmit 5.1 but ONE doesn't have a bluetooth transmitter.   PS4 on the other hand does have bluetooth, so if it's possible to do 5.1 over bluetooth theoretically PS4 could do it i guess.

The IFIXIT tear down shows a Bluetooth 4.0 controller. Also says BT is not listed in the specs. I am still searching.

I think the bluetooth in ONE is for the wireless controllers, but it's not standard bluetooth, it's microsoft flavor.

I'd sort of like to know something about those rather strange XO FOUR and XO SEVEN. Why is there so little info about them? Why do we have to wait until March for them to release if the only substantial piece missing is the adapter?

Turtle Beach is selling other compatible headsets now, and throwing the XB1 adapter in for free when it releases. It all makes me wonder what is so darn special about the XO FOUR and XO SEVEN.

Deep - I just bought the TB Sevens and it is wired.  The nice thing is that I don't ever have to change batteries to hear it.  Unfortuantely, I will not get the full potential until the adapter comes out for the X1 (can't customize all the settings yet).   The cool thing is that if you buy one of the selected headsets, you will receive a free adapter for the X1 when those are released.

I'm getting impatient for an XB1, a headset, TITANFALL, Destiny and Halo 5ish. That's my problem. Everytime I'm ready to make the jump, some little contradiction gives me the finger. +60 years old and I still get very impatient waiting for toys. Grrrr!

Contrary conditions giving me the finger.
1. Acceptable XB1 bundle that saves ~$50.
2. Blu-Ray movie playback update. (So I can move existing Blu-Ray player.)
3. TOS Link Surround sound update for wireless headset.
4. Wireless Surround headset that is fully XB1 compatible.
5. Destiny, way too frigging late in the year. (Considering the info we know, I think Bungie has reconsidered their offering and gone back to work adding stuff.)
6. Halo 5. I want it now. I want to know what Master Chief and Cortana are up to. I want episodic Halo content now too!
7. TITANFALL. I just want it now, for fucks sake!
8. A Kinect title my wife and I will both like.
9. Oh yeah, a new Panasonic Plasma. Not actually XB1 related but bugging my ass. My 6 year old 50" Panasonic is working great but Panasonic is going to stop making plasmas in March and when they stop, the absolute best HDTV on the market will be gone. So I am waiting for a sale to get at least a 55" VT60.

Looks like it's going to be a miserable fucking snow filled winter too. Somebody hold me tight. I'm ready to explode!

XB1 plays Blurays......  ?

I hear you on the plasma front and I hope you can get one.  I have one of the last Pioneers, myself - still the best PQ I've ever seen.  So glad I got one before they died off.  Panny is second only to them, and I have an ST30 in my bedroom.

Blu-Ray movie. Have you successfully played one yet? MS said XB1 would need a update to enable it. Perhaps that update has already occured?

6 years playing Halo on my Panny and no screen burn. I already had known it wouldn't. Still, the idea of screen burn is so pervasive, it's stayed in peoples heads.

I bet people don't know OLED TV are showing signs of temporary image retention. I hope it goes away before the prices come down to LCD levels.

I have owned Trittons, Astro's and Steel Series....My honest opinion is wait to see what is going to be released by the headset companies that will natively support the Xb1 (I assume you are just Xbox console due to your listed consoles) without a god damn adapter. The only problem with this is, I do not think you will get all the big boys showing their "next gen" goodies until around E3. I mean if it was not out by Xmas or at least announced "coming this holiday season" then what incentive do they have to release it out early, then just blow a marketing budget for E3...anyway.

If you cannot wait then a little bit more info might help make up a decission for you:

Are you playing in an office/man cave/loft and only sit a few feet away from a tv/monitor while playing? If the answer is yes, then wireless might not be that big of a deal for you. If you are sitting 7-10 ft away from your 40+ inch tv, then wireless might be more your thing and might make more senese if you have a pack of animals/children/chanimals running around.

You are NOT limited to only settling for just a specific brand of headphones, IF you do not mind having wires. I use a Astro mix amp (first gen) and  the Steel series Siberia V2. I get the bennefits of the very versital Astro Mix amp and the lighter more comfortable Siberia headset. Hell you can plug in any headset with a 3.5 plug into the mixamp and it will work. The only issue with that is your comm mic work around you will have to figure out. This will range from going ghetto style and wrap and xbox mic around your neck to (depending on your electrical skills) fabricating your own mic.

Anyway, all the headphones listed by everyone above are awesome. When it comes down to the brass tacks, it will all depend on if you want to deal with wires/wireless, adapters and mic work arounds. Or just wait... wink

Thanks LB.

I am generally 7-8 feet away from the TV. I plan to go wireless and it will be my first dedicated gaming headset.  I would pay more than what the XO SEVEN cost but I'm also waiting for absolute compatibility confirmation.

Thanks guys for all the feedback and input.  I thought about waiting but really I don't mind getting one now because I need it to work with botht he X1 and 360 since I still play on there a lot with my two sons.

Not in a big hurry though so plenty of time to see whats coming out.

Polk's information for the headset was so limited, I couldn't determine if it is a Wireless headset.

4 Shot Xbox One Gaming Headphones

The 4 Shot is designed specifically for the Xbox One®, for wireless gaming audio and chat.

  • Included headset adapter connects to your wireless Xbox One controller, placing audio controls at your fingertips.
  • Compatible with Xbox One, smart phones & tablets: take calls with the touch of a button.
  • Polk Optimized Electro-acoustic Tuning (POET) delivers legendary Polk sound in a headphone: rich immersive and realistic.
  • Retractable near-field gaming microphone is never in the way.

I'm assuming that it's just connected to the controller, but it is vague.  Will just have to patiently wait and see.

Yeah, that "for wireless gaming" should be enough but then I couldn't find any discussion or pictures  on the wireless control module or how it connects to the XB1.

That sounds like I could listen to my I-tunes off the phone as well? And maybe even conference calls (write off)?

Color me interested on this one.

oh, it was a day one download - you have to download the bluray player "app".  Works great.

Yeah, burn in doesn't happen.  IR between screens sometimes happens but goes away pretty immediately and only happens if it's on a screen for a long time.
