Factions..? Stats..?

Bungie has kept the importance of Factions within Destiny sorta vauge. Shocker! Anyway, the video below goes into some possible uses and value of Faction Interaction (Faction Interaction TM). I have almost NO experience with MMORPG types of games. So, some of the info here has me even more curious how it's gonna play out.
