XB1 Headset Adapter Mic Monitoring

In an effort to try and figure out why I do not have mic monitoring with my new XO7 headset on the XB1, I discovered it is due to the stereo headset adapter we are forced to use by Microsoft.

I had initially assumed it was a Turtle Beach issue, but it impacts other headsets as well.

If you want mic monitoring added to the next controller/adapter update then go to the link below and let your voice be heard!

I'm just not certain what I'm voting on.  It does work.  So what could they do?

You mentioned Turtle Beachs, which should work same as my Astros.  There's definitely some fiddling you have to do on the adapter to get the levels right, but it's there.

Now if you're just talking about the X07's that get the audio from the controller, then I understand.  But TB and Astros should work fine.

I'm referring to the issue of "mic monitoring" not being supported by the headset adapter sold by Microsoft for the XB1. This is not just for the headset I have, but basically for any headset using the Microsoft adapter.

We get chat and game audio just fine, but without the monitoring you can't hear yourself talk and makes you feel like you have to shout. Stick a finger in each ear and talk - that's what it's like with no monitoring.

I'm not 100% sure how the Astros work, but I'm assuming you don't have to worry with the Microsoft adapter since you can use the mix-amp. Correct? If this is the case, then you probably do not have an issue with your headset.

No, I use the MS adapter - that's the only way to get voice chat.  It works the same as the old TB ones with the adapter (example: X41's, etc).  I know what "no monitoring" would be like (though your description isn't the best since you'd hear yourself just fine if you plug your ears - try it).  I'm saying it works fine on the Astros, you just have to set the mix correctly on the headset.

I think where I got confused is you were talking about X07's and also TB's as if they were two different headsets - but I think you meant only the X07's.  Which get their audio from the controller.  In this case yes they may have an issue.  But it's not the adapter with the issue, it's your headphones not pulling monitoring back into them since it seems that they can't do that within the actual headphones like the Astros/old TB's.

The way MM works is the headset feeds through from the mic into the headset, through the headset itself.  If the headset doesn't work like that, you won't get MM.  It has nothing to do with the controller or adapter.  Example:  I can her myself through MM on my Astros whether they are plugged into the controller or not.  It's the X07's with the issue, not the chat adapter.

With regard to Dolby Headphone - on the Astros this is run through the mixamp and created.  So, it's not an issue for that brand.  However I'm not sure the controller supports that codec/bandwidth.  This is why I didn't bother with the stereo headset at all.

from the xbox forums:

"I talked to turtle beach support and they told me that they are developing a headset adapter on their own that can support mic monitoring and bass boost etc. It is going to be included in their new xbox one headset "XO one"

So, sounds like they're making an XP7 that will be like other premium ones and will work same as the Astros and X41's did.

Gotcha.

Well all I know is that others have issues with monitoring and not just Turtle Beach. I contacted Turtle Beach here is the response:

Quote:
The XO FOUR and XO SEVEN depend on the packaged Microsoft Stereo Headset Adapter for all functions and capabilities, of which mic monitoring is not included. Unfortunately, we do not make the adapter, nor do we have the ability to change or update it.

Whatever that means. I've asked if this was a problem that can be fixed with an update to the adapter or if I basically have a $160 paperweight. I'm still waiting on a response.

I have confidence MS will upgrade the adapter firmware to include chat monitoring and I hate to show you this next thing.

I think TB has it's own work around for chat monitoring. I would not touch this until the full details are out.

Thanks, I couldn't find that earlier.

"The included Ear Force XO Headset Audio Controller places game and chat controls right at your fingertips plus variable Mic Monitor and Bass Boost. "

That is an X04 replacement.  Here's the uber set to replace and upgrade the X07's:

No wires, so it's like the Warheads.

nice dodge by TB saying it's MS's fault.  The adapter doesn't do the voice feedback, the headset does.

Well, perhaps my only hope is for TB to make their audio controller a standalone piece that we can buy. You have to figure there are a lot of XO4/7 headsets out there and plenty of us bitching about the lack of monitoring.

Thanks for the info.

Update from Turtle Beach:

Quote:
Every function of the XO FOUR and SEVEN headsets are provided by the headset adapter. If the adapter were to be updated to provide mic monitoring, then the XO FOUR and XO SEVEN would also have mic monitoring.

My next question I submitted was if the new audio adapter being developed for some of their new headsets (as listed above) would be sold as a standalone piece to be used with the XO 4/7 to provide monitoring.

The saga continues...

BTW, mic monitoring is not the be all to end all to solving problems with this first round of XB1 headsets. I sometimes feel like I am talking louder to overcome a problem but it really isn't an issue for me. The more frequently I use my MS XB1 headset, the less it bothers me. I wear hearing aids too and they probably complicate the issue.

You can learn to not yell. Any ways, some people need a good yelling at. Bad language too.

you need mic monitoring.  otherwise you can't tell if you're even talking loud enough for anyone to hear you and you're always talking over people.

I get what you mean DEEP, but I don't feel like this is something we should just have to deal with as "just the way it is". How this was not included as a basic function of the adapter is really beyond belief.

Yeah, I can just talk at a normal (or feels like normal) volume and it's all good. However, Shadow is right we need the monitoring for the very reasons he mentioned.

Before I get labelled an MS white knight, I should say this is my first true gaming headset. I didn't know for sure what to expect for $79. I'm quite pleased with it. From reviews, I knew mic feedback wasn't included. I can deal with it.

Next headset I get, it will include the feedback feature, if MS hasn't already patched it in.

Recommendation, do not buy any of the new XB1 headsets until full reviews are available. TB ads were inadequate for XO4 and XO7. Those effers wanted the same price for them as they did for full blown wireless sets with a transceiver.

For me, a gaming headset needs to be surround sound and have mic monitoring. Why the first round of TB headsets didn't have mic monitoring is beyond me. But they are not surround sound, so meh. Same for the stereo M$ and Polk headsets, meh.

My old school DX11's provide surround sound and mic monitoring. They work great!

So I have some TB xp 7.  Will they have talkback with MS adapter?  The center channel is broken, so for me to get them to work I have to mail them in.  If they arent going to have talkback or work well with XB1, Im not going to bother.

I also have astro A40s that still sound great but the mic doesnt work (a fit of rage afer dying the 30th time to Smough & Ornstein in Demon Souls)

I think that the A40s might work if you can still do old trick - wear headphones of choice (set voice to playback through TV) with the cheap mic that come with the consol around your neck, while you talk in it.  e.g. listern in Astros and talk onto the ms mike.  That worked witht he 360.  Does anyone know if it will work with the XB1

I dont really want to buy new top of the line headphones until the TB wireless surround sound come out for the X1 in late Oct.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Cleaned up confusing language from druken posting.
