Clutch cooking and gear sticks.
So I have been wondering, as is my want...I have problems in races with killing my clutch. So I thought what if I invest in an H gate gear stick. It's what I use in the real world so I have to assume I would be far more unlikely to get the timing wrong using something so familiar. Anyone with any thoughts before I hit the order button?
I frequently have the same problem.
Was thinking it was more a problem of downshifting while rpm still too high
No not for me, at least not all the time. It is certainly a case of mistiming foot and hand with the paddles at least 80% of the time. When making fast changes the hand can flick the paddles before the foot has had time to fully depress the clutch, to not do that requires thinking about an action that should be automatic. An H gate is for me an automatic "thoughtless" action, the timing of foot and hand honed after decades of driving. It may be slightly slower, but not I think as much as auto clutch.
Isn't Knight using a wheel?
Also, my opinion, paddle shifters simply aren't meant to be used with a conventional clutch pedal.
I have been playing a different game lately. Went into FM4 last night and forgot to B-button clutch for the first half-dozen shifts, lol
Yes. Your problem is most likely timing. My h-shifter is having issues so I tried running with the paddles,no go. I switched to seq. shifted and it is better. Had not really thought about why but I would guess the extra time it takes to move my hand from wheel to shifter allows full clutch movement. I will be going back to h-shifter as soon as a new one arrives. So my 2 cents is get the shifter you'll enjoy it.
Just what I needed to hear :-) One shifter set heading this way. Shhh don't tell the wife
I'm back n forth from rFactor to Fm4 which amounts to DFPro with ACL and paddles to controller with full clutch and thumb shifting, hooboy!
Fun though...
I got a question for the controller users. I just switched to manual with clutch in the game and I use the 'A' button as the clutch so I hit it together with up or down shifts. My question is do you guys let off the gas just a moment during the up shift? or do you just let the engine bounce off the rev limiter during up-shifts?
I find letting the engine bounce off the rev-limiter annoying and without TCS it seems to cause the backend to come loose on high powered cars. Is there any speed advantage to just holding the gas down the entire time?
Keep it floored on upshifts Demon.
Definitely get the shifter set. I tried using the foot clutch with paddle shifters and had the same problem with the timing. You are right about using the foot clutch with h-pattern shifter, it just feels natural after doing it in real life for so many years. It is not quite as fast as using paddles and button clutch, but it is a lot more immersive and you feel great about a win when you get it. Glad to have the ACL now, hopefully it comes out soon for the CSR wheel so all you guys can start enjoying it too. Be careful though, it is addictive and will make you lazy.
Yes I would agree the paddles are not really for use with the clutch, but I can never quite get using the button and auto clutch slows you down by as much as two seconds a lap. I just bet the new firmware turns up as the same time as the shifters I have just ordered But I look forward to the added layer of realism anyway, I am sure I will soon be shifting gears as fast as I need, and not cooking my clutch as soon or as often.
Thanks for your input folks.
I was watching you on Wednesday night, Knight when I went AFK for a race.
What I did notice was your clutch was normally only about 50% depressed when you changed gear up or down.
No point to my post like but just a bit of FYI
Yes, that is part of the problem. it is such a fast change that that tends to happen. Anyway gear stick ordered...Now looking at cockpits Jaysus! what have I got into...
Yeah, that's "blipping" the throttle on the shifts.
It can be hazardous on a large HP beast in low gear, but ultimately, it's the way to go.
Obviously downshifting takes a tad more finesse.
Knight, another thing to consider. When you have your wheel hooked up, go into the advanced controller options on Forza 4. Set the clutch outside deadzone at 30. That way you won't have to push the pedal down as far to disengage the clutch. Saved me a lot of transmission damage.
Thanks Troy, I'll do that could make all the difference sunday when I just have to beat Parcells again
I'm not at all sure this week...but next week I'm back on home turf and probably with no handicap...I will beat him for the series!!!! I'll give him "newman"
Not next week...next month D'oh
I was thinking something like this
3 races
1v1
1st race. Car / Track chosen by Knight - 3 laps
2nd race. Car / Track chosen by Parcells - 3 laps
3rd race. Stock mini on Fujimi full 2 laps.
First to 2 wins is the winner
I shall be taking bets and the winner gets half of the prize money
Oh no mate, this is being fought out in the STCC. Only place I seem to have a chance LOL...
Knight, one thing I learned when I started using the H-gate is: Driving one is something COMPLETELY different than racing one! You will kill your tranny or engine on your first few tries or completely miss your turn in points, but stick with it and it will become one of your better investements.
Well practice is something I do a lot of and as I have not been useing my wheel and pedal set up for long fingers crossed it won't take long to get up to speed....But thanks for the heads up, I wont panic if things don't fall into place right away
