Trackday Mayhem - Cadwell Park
Trackday Mayhem - Cadwell Park
Well I did my first trackday of 2012 and thought I'd post a couple of pictures. I usually do around 3 or 4 track days a year (depending on funds), the first this year was at one of my favourite UK tracks, Cadwell Park. A fanastic track with a mixture of fast and technical sections and various elevation changes including the infamous and rather steep Mountain. Anyway a couple of shots
At the top of mountain (front end goes light just as you crest the top)........

entering Hairpin (took them ages to think of that one), could I be any further away from the apex.......

and to give you an idea of what the Super Bikes that race there do when they hit the top of mountain......

Nice! I love trackdays! Any video of you ripping it up out there?
Cheers!
I took my mates GoPro to do some in car videing, but I only had a suction mount which the organisers/stewards wouldn't allow me to use. The camera had to be fixed in place by a secure mounting either on a roll cage (which I don't have) or using a headrest strap type mount. So only have the photo's.
I wouldn't worry if you car isn't modified, one of my mates goes on with a standard Mazda MX5 Mk.1. He has the same amount of fun as those who turn up in track focused cars.
As for costs, track days cost anything from £100 upto £250 depending on track and when the track day is (it's usually cheaper at the beginnning of the year than the middle of the year). There's a number of Trackday companies out there, the two I've used are MSV Trackdays and Javelin Trackdays (I've also booked direct with the track, such as Croft). Both are very well organised and cover a number of tracks around the U.K. My advise would be to book yourself onto a Novice Track day. These are ideal for those who have not run a track day before. They are usually sessioned rather than open pit lane. This means you will have around 12 cars in your group and you'll run one 20 minute session every hour (usually 3 in the morning and 3 to 4 in the afternoon).
On top of the trackday fee there's helmet hire, which I think is around £10 (I've my own helmet so haven't had to hire one). You can also request instruction as well, this varies from say £100/£150 for half the day for open pit lane track days to about £25 for a single session in a sessioned track day. You can also take a passenger for an additional £10 or add another driver (usually around £50 for each additional driver)
As for trackday insurance, this is like regular car insurance, varies depending on the car, value and cover. Be prepared for high excess though, think on one quote the excess was £4000 for my car. You will probably know this, but your regular car insurance will not cover you for track use, that includes going around the Ring.

Cheers mate. I'll look into those companies. Clears a few things up for me. Not quite as expensive as I first thought.
