Deep, I know you keep tabs on these things. Was there a population spike in Halo 3 last night?
Sorry.
Even if I was, and I wasn't this time, B.net isn't collecting UU/24hr data. Waypoint is collecting but not showing anything yet. I also know the playlist numbers are horribly inaccurate for Halo 3 any given moment (confirmed by Bungie a long time ago). REACH playlist numbers are very accurate in comparison and updated by the minute almost.
If the UU/24hrs was being updated, that would be where the spike would show. Anybody who says they know are probably talking out of their ass.

Search times in the Social playlists were much faster than usual, if that's any indication of increased population.
I also saw quite a few people sporting the "populate halo 3 day" emblem. I would guess that the event was a moderate success.
I hopped on around 1PM on Sat, and the entire pop was like 18K.
^^This.
At one point 7 on the 7th population showed 0. I had no trouble finding games in the playlist.
