Gamespot Article - 343i Re-inventing Halo
A few new tidbits.
Spartan Ops' first season will span weeks not months.
More people are still playing campaign than online multiplayer. It's important we never forget this detail.

I found the follow quote to be curious:
The initial impression I had of Spartan Ops was one of continuous seasons. Certainly not just one seaon of "several weeks". There has to be more to this if it's supposed to take the place of Firefight. Plus, 343 has made it a point that we can level up up our players in Spartan Ops and then take them into matchmaking with our new unlocks. This mode has to have some staying power to keep people playing if part of it's purpose is to encourage people to try matchmaking.
We still have a lot to learn about Spartan Ops, but this is the first piece of info on this mode I've seen that causes me some concern.
Cost vs playability.
If it works well, I'll pay a reasonable price for more campaign. I've always wanted the feature and was always willing to pay for it.
How it affects player progression, I do not know. I suspect Spartan Ops season 1 will not be a one and done deal for earning new features. You'll probably have the typical Normal/Heroic/Legendary difficulty levels and each will earn more or less credits.
interesting read, i'd be willing to pay a reasonable cost to continue the experience if its a quality mode...
Twitch
Bolding mine.
Hopefully that can be mitigated or reversed. I feel confident that a more competitive Halo game can help bridge that gap. Hell, you can be casual by yourself in single player campaign. You don't need Live to be casual.

riiiiiiiiiiight...
I really do hope that Halo 4 becomes the most competitive Halo title ever. I mean that in the broadest terms too. I want more competitions to spring up at the lower skilled levels. If that happens then the professional levels will evolve and prosper.
There are competitions at lower levels, at least on 2old2play. Those are called clan matches and mixers.
Honestly, I'm not sure the bolded part can be quite fixed in this generation. It'll take more moderation and fewer Timmies out there. Some folks, and this part confounds me, play with randoms. It's like they know of social networking and when it comes to networking for a game to play online, they're completely clueless about finding some folks.
That's called Xbox Live. That's called LAN parties. You're looking for a solution in search of a problem.
There's also the 90-9-1 principle. Think that might apply?
Sign up for MLG Game Battles, then.
Well, you can't bitch about there not being anything for this, and then not want it when it is there. I mean, I get that it's MLG gametypes and maps, but I thought it was important that the community at large succeed, not just the community you want to succeed.
I am not talking about what I want to do personally but rather what the Halo community needs for professional competition to grow beyond what it is. For that you need Little League, Bantam League, Pony League etc. These leagues should be regional in nature such that there is a stronger chance of audience identification and attachment to the players. The higher the players they know rise through the ranks the more they want to watch.
Before I started to go off topic I hadn't the benefit of watching the Penny Arcade video on pro gaming or the knowledge that GameBattles is having paid competitions. Maybe that's where this discussion belongs now. To say nothing of me being confused right now.
grassroots is fundamental in the longterm growth of any organization
i'll be very dissapointed if it is just a few weeks. if it's DLC, that's ok. then you can take it or leave it, but at least it's there.
this isn't the type of game mode i'm interested in, but i do like the idea of it.
