Internet Explorer Coming to Xbox 360

Reports say Microsoft is working on modified version of Internet Explorer 8 that will include internet functionality.

For making an all inclusive box for entertainment I can see why they are adding it, but not sure it will come in handy, unless they have links to sites in games etc.....  Time will tell, but it only makes sense since they have already introduced a version of Bing into the Xbox.

Are we suppose to wave our hands to click links, or use voice?  Stupid.  But then i thought MSN Messanger, facebook and twitter were stupid adds too.

Sweet.  As a longtime IE8 user I'm really happy they're adding internet functionality to it.  I'm sick of staring at about:blank all day.

But IE8 on my xbox?  I don't see how I'd use that any more than the ones I ignore on my PS3 and Wii.

I'll problably never use it.  But I'm suprised that they are going to open the web on their closed network.

First, how much money are they going to rape us for in regards to virus protection because we all know that running M$ is like having screen door on a submarine. What a joke, you control the thing with the Kinnect.

And since no one has said anything yet...

How badly is this going to freak out when you visit youporn?  wink

Interesting... wonder if it will have silverlight and flash support in the browser.  Wonder if you'll be able to do a google hangout or skype with the kinect.

I assume these are some of the things they are trying to intergrate, to have that all inclusive entertainment box for the living room they have been trying to push for some time.

Correction

Quote:

Microsoft is currently testing a modified version of Internet Explorer 9 on its Xbox 360 console, according to our sources.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/10/3012013/internet-explorer-browser-xbox-360-kinect

I was going to say, why would they go with IE8 when IE10 is in a consumer prevew status? They probably went with IE9 for testing because it's out and IE10 has its own set of new strict guidelines and requirements. Fingers crossed nothing gets in their way of being able to use IE10.

@Tank: There's already a Kinect for Windows, so waving hands to click things is already happening at our desks and HTPCs. Then again, I also use the social apps. Perfect for finding out why I can't connect to EA's servers.

We all know MS has been trying to get the 360 to be the media hub in every living room. "Oh, and it plays video games."

@LocGaw: I've been using MS's free virus protection (Security Essentials) for years, and based on the occassional security audits, it has worked perfectly. Based on its criticisms, I would compare it to condoms preventing STDs but not so great at curing them. On a clean machine, you're golden. Installing it to get rid of junk, you're better off just wiping your drive and starting over. Also, a full system scan can take forever (so I set it up to turn on my computer in the middle of the night and run the leave-no-rock-unturned scan)...but now I'm way off topic.

Staying off topic, you can run a full scan without it bogging down your computer. I surf and watch Youtube videos while I run a scan.

Yeah, in the settings you could limit how much CPU usage the scan uses.

The 360 will need a malware and spyware remover.

What if it uses only flash memory?

I doubt he was being serious, but if it were possible to infect the 360 it wouldn't matter if you're using a hard drive or a USB stick.

the 360 is a good machine. i don't understand why they would want to risk ruining a good thing.

i'm guessing it's going to be an integrated part from launch for the next gen, so they'll run it now to see what happens.

I'm really hoping this isn't true, or at least will be optional. I don't want to use my xbox for a browser, that's what I have a PC for. The only time I've even gone to the Bing tab in the dashboard is to see if a new "pretty picture" has been added yet. I am not looking forward to the day when I have to buy antivirus for my xbox, since I'm sure the MS one will be SO RELIABLE (/sarcasm).

But like I said, I hope this doesn't happen, or if it does, I can opt out or turn it off.

edit - Also, you have to wonder if the "idea men" behind this know what it is to play games. We don't use full qwerty keyboards for playing on a console. I know PC games use keyboard, and that's fine, but what kind of browsing am I going to do having to move my cursor from key to key using a controller. It would take forever to do anything. And sure, they could offer a keyboard easy enough, but I sit on my couch when I play xbox, not at a desk. Just saying, this "advancement" seems silly and unnecessary

First. Porn on the big tv nuff said. Second you can hook up a qwerty keyboard to the Xbox. I used to play ffxi on the 360 with a keyboard and mouse.

Sure, I can hook up a keyboard, but why? I have a desk with a PC at it for work and internet use. It's a stable surface for typing and I always make sure it has good antivirus on it, and that it's constantly updated. And for me, resting a keyboard on my lap or a coffee table would be uncomfortable and slow.

But all I'm saying is, I hope it's optional, or that I can at least turn it off. I don't want my xbox to be a browser, I want it to be an xbox. In my personal opinion, opening the system to everything that can happen to an internet browser is a bad idea.

Agreed.

I hope it's optional.

A few months ago I would have been intrigued with the idea. The only reason I haven't been happy with the web browsers on the other consoles is because of how limited they are. Now however, I could care less.

Ever since i built a high-powered desktop I haven't turned my Xbox on more than five times in the last few months. Seriously, I barely use it. Same goes for my PS3. I'm not gaming any less, in fact I've probably been gaming MORE.

But, if they want to make a browser work for a gaming console they are going to have to open it up some and beef up it's hardware.

My graphics card is more powerful than both of my consoles combined. I can run multiple processes because I have shit ton of memory. Hell, one of my DDR3 sticks has more memory than my Xbox and I have four of the fucking things. I could be running multiple monitors pretty easy (and plan to). Once I get a second gpu to run an sli set-up, I could have 4 to 6 monitors going, all running diffferent processes. How the hell can a gaming console compete with THAT.

If it weren't for some of the 360 specific games and my Xbox LIVE buddies I would have absolutely NO use for it.
