the best thing you ever ate!
the best thing you ever ate!
alright my fellow 202p chowhounds, what is the best thing you ever ate? was it something you concocted on your own? something you ate at a restaurant? give specifics if at all possible and if you have the recipe, bring it on and let us all enjoy. *let's keep it food related - there is a thread for nsfw somewhere for the other stuff:)*
back in grad school we had a mixer for all the transplants that came from out west to go to lsu. one of the guys made some smoked jalapeno poppers wrapped in extra-thick bacon. he smoked the jalapenos and stuffed them with cream cheese mixed with shredded sharp (like REALLY REALLY REALLY sharp) cheddar cheese, then he wrapped them in this really think cut bacon and cooked them on the grill. it was really hot out and we were drinking poor man's margeritas made out of limeade and jose quervo and beer so cold it tasted like water. oh yeah:)
Pappas Bros Steakhouse: The Grilled Double Lamb Chops It is the best Lamb I've ever ate. The seasoning is perfect that you don't need the "mint jelly sauce" at all. If I was granted one last meal, that would be it.
Waterborn's BBQ ribs. Sweet baby Jesus, that man knows how to make good ribs.

There's been way too much good food that I consumed that I can say was the best ever, but one of the most memorable was the pop rocks sushi at Yellowtail at the Bellagio. Sushi is not all about taste, but texture, and we didn't even know what we ordered, we just said bring us something good. I think it was a crab/tuna roll that was tempura'd, but as it went down the pop rocks fizzled. This struck us by surprise and we instantly loved it and ordered another two rolls for the table.
Again, I could go on and on about good eats, but that was definitlely one of the more memorable.
You meant food? Sorry, got misleaded by the title...
same here...i had pics to post and everything.
Fried chicken at Willie Mae's Scotch House in New orleans.
A local burger joint across the street from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville TN. Still haven't found a better burger. Five Guys comes close though.
EDIT: Found a pic of the food
They also serve fried honeybuns with icecream:
I'm a regular lurker on certain BBQ websites, and this is one of them. You can't view this without getting hungry. BBQ is the best food in the world, IMO.

this place has always been the standard for me when it comes to hamburgers.
I've had a LOT of really good food over the past few years. My favorite type of food is cajun.
But, to be honest, If I had to pick one thing I'd have to say steak. And the best steak I've ever eaten is my own grilling. Not saying I'm great but I cook it to the medium rare I like with the seasoning I like. I live right across the street (Seriously, my front door is no shit 40 feet from their's) from an awesome meat market. I walk across, get one of their amazing ribeyes. Liberally seasoned with Serendipity seasoning salt and worchester sauce prior to grilling.
Washed down with a nice pub ale... MMMMM.
When I was in College there was a place called Zach's right across from Sam Houston State. They had extremely good burgers and cajun spicy fries (house-cuts liberally seasoned with a cajun blend seasoning / cayenne powder and layered with jalepenoes). That's a very close second.
My Grandmother's fried chicken would win but she passed away a few years ago.
Here's to the simple things ladies and gentlemen.
oh man, going to grad school at lsu we would make regular trips down to n'awlins (the way they say it there). we used to eat at this little hole in the wall locals only joint right off jackson square called the gumbo shop. literally, the ONLY way you'd know there was a restaurant there was they had a shingle (i shit you not, an actual 17th century slate shingle recycled from one of the many roof jobs on the st. louis cathedral) painted with the restaurant name hanging outside one of the archway entrances to the courtyard where the restaurant was. new orleans in the french quarter has these big square buildings that have courtyards in the center of the building - and you get to them either through one of the establishments on the first floor or these dark, narrow arched corridors. most of them look like alleys you're not so sure you should take your wife/gf down. but this joint had the best food. red beans and rice you'd kill for. a dozen different kinds of po-boys that were all awesome. the duck and sausage gumbo was unbelievably awesome. the only thing we ever ate there i didn't totally love was the regular gumbo - not because it tasted bad, it was frickin awesome - but cuz okra grosses me out completely. fried okra. okra in gumbo. okra in soup. blech!
there were 4 of us that went down pretty regularly and we'd get different things and share so we could try more. it has it's own website and whatnot now, so not sure if it's as cool as it was back in the day. if you're ever in new orleans, you HAVE to head down to cafe du monde during the morning hours and have coffe and beignets(these puffy little pastries covered in powdered sugar). even if you're not a coffee drinker, you gotta try it. the combination is insanely tasty. then wander around jackson square and the quarter looking at all the wierd ass people that live and work down there and all the funky stores, then eat lunch at the gumbo shop. i can't think of anything on their menu i wouldn't order many times over. the red beans and rice may be my all-time favorite though.
i'm kind of surprised we haven't gotten more replies in this thread. the recipe and bacon threads alone were epic on the old site. and reading waterborn's food adventures was like a form of soft-core porn. titilating, exciting, provocative, but ultimately left you wishing you were there to satisfy those base desires:)
so maybe we should open this one up a bit - how about we ask for insider tips on places that you've eaten that were awesome. either in your home town, some place you were stuck for a couple of days while traveling for work and you found a gem, your favorite locals joint from college, whatever.
i posted about a place i found in new orleans above, but i also have one for san antonio. if you're a carnivore who's feeling the need to satisfy your meat-need - there are 2 churrascarias/brazilian grills here. "fogo de chao"(which is downtown about 2 bloks off the riverwalk), and "chama gaucha"(out on the nw side of town on loop 1604). both serve about the same dishes, and i can recommend either with zero hesitation. just beware, go hungry and bring your visa. the best bet is to go for lunch, it's half the price of dinner - which is $50 a person. that's the ouch part. the good part is the food. there's a salda bar and they bring these little plates of side-dishes to your table, but don't fall for that trick. don't waste precious stomach space on side items. they have these huge wheels of cheese on the salad bar, grab some of the cheese and some potato salad and go back to your table. the real-deal is the sizzling hot skewers of all kinds of freshly grilled meat the waiters walk around the room with. they come by your table and slice off a few pieces and keep going. and they keep bringing you new stuff to try until you explode. if you're starving and feel the need for meat, go to either of these joints. dress is as casual as you want, or as fancy as you please. i've seen chicks in swimsuits and prom dresses in there at the same time. don't order bar drinks, they're good but EXPENSIVE:P
Can't beat Lobster + cajun boiled shrimp.
Grilled sea bass in Croatia. So simple, it was just so fresh and seasoned with a little salt but I have never been able to recreate it.
In Baltimore there is a little hole in the wall bar called NachoMama's, they serve a half gallon Margarita in large hubcap (yes an actual car's hubcap), keep NattyBo on tap, and have the names of their regulars carved into their reserved stools a the bar......they make by far the best nacho plate I have ever had. It was about 5 layers each consisting of tortia chips, refried beans, shreaded steak, cheese, salsa, and peppers. The entire stack (about 5" high and taking up a large pizza pan) was then baked into a giant glob where the chips were still crisp, but the cheese was totally melted. topped with more salsa, guac, and sour cream. I have tried to find a place that can make anything as good as that nacho tray....so far nothing even comes close.
I couldn’t come up with “best evar”. I couldn’t even decide the best in the last 12 months.
Ate really well on vaca last summer. My wife kept randomly picking joints with really good food. After the third pick, I quit asking questions and just waited for her to point to a restaurant. This is pick #2 in Fort Collins, CO. I saw white tablecloths and formal place settings (for lunch even) thru the window and said no f’ing way my kids could hack it. I was wrong.

Freshly breaded chicken tenders, from scratch chicken pot pie, and mascarpone-cheddar mac n chz for my daughters. Mrs. Snuph had the Spicy Thai Rice Noodles w/Grilled Bistro Steak. I did New Zealand Clams Jay’s Way (a spicy play on linguine in clam sauce) and a couple Odell’s 5 Barrel Pale Ales. Outstanding lunch.
Didn’t hurt that I went from there to the brewery tour at Odell’s, followed by a couple flights of samplers in the tasting room. Then realized I was within walking distance of Fort Collins Brewing Co where I might have had a couple (few?) more sampler flights. It was a really good day.

little hot dog place in dublin ohio. the one with peppers is wrapped in bacon before its cooked
Best food I've ever had was courtesy of Bliznot. While in Chicago for the 2008 LAN, a bunch of us were being tourists downtow, when Stridog mentioned that he was meeting up with Bliz for dinner at a greek restaurant. Pretty much everyone had the lamb kapama, which was the best damn thing I've ever put in my mouth. It was like food-sex for my mouth. If my tongue could orgasm, it would have.
The following year when Ms. Plato and myself went back for the next LAN, we went back to Santorini's and had the same meal again, just the two of us.
This lamb was so damned good, that when I'm done with all the university crap next year, I'll happily hop a flight from Sudbury to Chicago just to have that lamb again.
Also, this is why we need the have the LAN back. I'm just sayin', go for the LAN return for the food.
yeah, if you can't find some pretty good chow in Chi-town, you've got dead tastebuds. the best tiramisu i ever had was at some little mom & pop italian joint there.
