Backlog Attacks! - Two Worlds I

In an attempt to cleave up my backlog, I selected an RPG for the 360 that I will attempt to complete under the tutelage and derision of 2Old2RPG.

Release date - 8/21/2007

Boy oh boy, loading this up instantly you know that you've stepped back in time.  I didn't expect that a game released a year after Oblivion would be this far behind graphically.

There's not much in the way of a tutorial, aside from very early on of "by the way, press X to take your weapon out" and "use RT to swing."  There's no mention of the spell wheel, inventory management or using the map at forty minutes in.

Oh, wait, there's a level up screen?  Great!  How do I...?  Right, mash randomly until you add some points.  Great!

This is going to be awesome.

2W is my favorite coaster.

Cad, you are a better man then me if you are actually going to sit through and play. I think you can repeatedly rob the townsfolk in that game so money is no issue... Also, unless they patched it, you can stack weapons on to your equipped weapon and construct a weapon well above your level. Also, the Archer job is brutal. You should be able to 1 shot any mob, even if they con red(except for a Dragon), with the Archer job.

Why?  Just slam your junk in a car door - at least that will be over quicker.

oh geez it aint that bad. Sure it has mammoth exploits, and the controls are wonky, and the voice acting and story are lame. Its still got lots stuff to discover, its fun killing mobs and has a huge world to explore.

As far as killing mobs, it becomes fun. Until you can take on a couple at a time, it is brutal. A melee job will be crushed by anything right off if there are multiples or it cons as anything but something easy.

After posting last night, I decided I would flip through the manual in bed and see if I could make heads or tails of what was going on.

There is a lot of colloquial jargon in the manual.  A lot.  For building up a world in which NPC's toss off a "forsooth", the language in the manual is quite loose.

If you have  to zip from A to B in a real hurry, then teleporting is the thing for you.

AND

If you DO visit a Skillchagner, just select the skill you don't want anymore - and hey presto! - those skill points will appear on your credits.

Okay, then.

The background chapter (page) in the book is a little strange.  If flashes from giving backstory to editorial.

There are of course many rumors about this - simply unbelievable rumors too - but let's ignore these for the time being... we have no wish to further the interests of the Orcs - not until we have all the facts at our fingertips.  Much water will pass below the bridge of the Gon before we can learn where the truth lies.  However - let us return to historical fact...

It is like reading two drafts of an undergraduate paper that was never properly edited.  Yes, let us not get too opinionated and confrontational with the mythology we just created.  What?

Then of course, on page six, they misspell the main character's sister's name.  It is "Kira" on-screen and "Kyra" in the text.  Whoops.

One of my favorite bits:

Your can really go to town creating him [the character] in the Character window after you start the game.

And then you can really go to town once you get out of the window!  It is like living in an Escher painting.

We created new words that aren't made up races, like "outwith" used on page 9:

If it so happens that the location is outwith the range of the minimap...

By the way, make sure you know that you can use SPACEBAR, which is somewhere in the first few pages, which I read last night as well.

Screen shots seemed to be exclusively PC and didn't always match up to descriptions in the text.

Overall, one of the most amusing manuals I have read in some time.

Woo!  Created a weapon enhancer!  A gem that was +2 poison!  Attached it to my weapon!  Walked to town!  Game froze!  Argh!

Thats nothing... Wait until you spend hours and hours farming/crafting an epic weapon that you could not equip normally without the equip/craft glitch only to find a weapon that makes it look pathetic. You could have equiped the new weapon 20 levels ago too.

Fale hosed this game down awhile ago. Long before it released he said there was no fixing the level of broken that was 2w.

No, I haven't given up on Two Worlds.  I was playing Batman: Arkham City on the PS3 for a while and nearly have completed it, but let a friend borrow it, so I think that platinum will never happen.

Since I last played, nothing has happened because it is a static world.

In game typos have been found - Thieve's Cave.  Really?

I purchased all the skills, which just took a bit of wandering around and finding some skill vendors.

I have an awesome sword and keep finding better and better armor, though apparently that will cap at some point as the higher level armor doesn't allow you to swim while wearing it.

I love that items don't degrade as you use them.  At.  All.  Yay!

Graveyards can be a hoot, if I don't locate the closest magic regen area first.  Kiting the bad guys around and heal heal heal like a madman while hoping that some of the poison effects wear off has been hilarious.  Someone que up "Yackety Sax" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnHmskwqCCQ

Game save time is about 5:30, 20 out of 41 achievements so far.

The quest continues.

I've played a bit of LOTR War in the North on the 360.  Actually, I'm having more fun with Two Worlds.

Though neither is particularly good.

Closing thoughts:
I have 40/41 achievements.  The only remaining achievement is "Find All Locations", my character level is over fifty, about 53, I think.

Thinks I have liked:
Skill point allocation, though 2/3 of the skills are actually not useful, you get them whenlevel and also you kill a certain number or bad guys or discover enough teleports.

I liked the ease of upgrading weapons, which does break the game.

Lots of varied loot, though how useful the different stats are is a good question.  On the upside, they look different.

As you level you do waltz through enemies that were difficult in the past, though golems and dragons in the end game can still be annoying.

Things I didn't like:
The voice over dialogue.  Pretty horrible.

The game ends when you beat the final bad guy.  Go back to a previous save if you want to continue exlploring.

The magic system seems a bit delayed.  *click* Hm...  Oh, there goes the healing spell.  Speaking of which if you level up the magic class, it makes that particular class of spell more powerful.  I just thought it unlocked higher level spells.

I will plug along periodically on the last achievement.  Trade in value for the game is $0.25, so not much impetus to get rid of it .

Not as horrible as some would say, the interface gets some getting used to.  What to play next in Backlog Attacks?!?

A quick update.  I looked online at a forum and it mentioned a few areas "not on the map".

I went to one this afternoon and apparently it was one I was missing as the achievement for "Find All Locations" popped.

So, I complete my playthrough of Two Worlds.

Hooray!

You sir, are a better man than I! I couldn't stomach finishing the demo for that game! Although I did play the sequels' co-op maps.

Onesimos is as good as his word.  Though I am not sure if I am supposed to wear the shirt, don the wrist band, using the pens while playing Way of the Samurai 3.  Or, if I am supposed to imbibe the promoted alcoholic beverages while enduring Way of the Samurai 3.   I guess we'll just play it by ear on this end.
