I've got a Founder's Jenner, but have mostly been playing a Catapult. I enjoy the Jenner, but medium/heavy may suit me a little more. Scouting can definitely be fun, though.
JR7-DF
4x Med Laser, 1x AMS, 300XL, stripped out the SRMs. May try stripping the JJs and adding 2x SRM4 or something.
CPLT-C4
4x SRM6, 2x Med Laser, 1x AMS, near max armor - awesome for punishing people up close, not awesome at everything else. Putting an XL engine in it is fun for running at 80 kph, but not so great for actually being in SRM range.
AS7-K
2x ER Large Laser, 2x Med Pulse, 1x Gauss Rifle, 1x SRM6, 2x AMS - mostly just replaced the LRMs with SRMs, haven't had as much time in this as the Cats.
Alright, so I've seen a lot of complaints about the PPC from people who can't use them properly (they really need a clear, alternate frizzly effect if hitting a target at minimum range) and it got me thinking about the past incarnations, and how the PPC can have a role as being a distinct high-caliber weapon without getting lost among the Large Lasers and Gauss Rifles. So here comes an effortpost.
What's been done in the past? Mechwarrior 2 had PPCs hit hard and generate an amount of heat in the target, but that seems out of place now that games provide flamers and inferno ammo. More interestingly, Mechwarrior 3 added the interesting functionality of temporarily scrambling the user's HUD when hit as a result of the discharge.
While a fun little distraction, that could really be harnessed here in MWO, where there's such an emphasis on immersion and information warfare. Suppose that a PPC hit were to scramble out your HUD functions for a short time, leaving you without the helpful damage readouts, TK-avoiding IFF marks, pulling you out of thermal/night/magnetometric modes. Suddenly the PPC is more than just a non-hitscan Large Laser, and it's okay if it lacks the punch of a true ballistic.
Beyond just the HUD, MWO offers a good selection of other annoyances it could induce, such as popping an LRM boat in the face to make him stop that pesky indirect fire for a while, or alternatively using it to break-lock on that enemy Jenner/Raven that's spotting your team for him or temporarily cut links to that UAV or other specialized equipment.
This is not without BattleTech canon precedent and I'm pretty damn stoked that MWO is really embracing some of the TT rules and fluff such as the previously mentioned minimum ranges. TRO:3050 clearly states that PPCs (especially successive hits) can overload an enemy mech's computers and targeting sensor suites.
While heat/damage/range are surely scheduled to be rebalanced, it could really make the PPC competitive without worrying about DPS charts if it were taken another direction altogether played a role in information warfare. It'd be a reasonable loadout dilemma; go for the "easier" guaranteed damage from an ER Large, or go for something disruptive like the PPC? Something beyond your usual More DPS = Better Than formula of loadout selections.
And speaking of the ER line of weapons, perhaps as a result of the more "refined' particle beam systems of the ER PPC, it has a less pronounced effect than the standard "noisy" PPC to compensate for its enhanced engagement zone.
The new patch is suppose to be more balanced, new map river city very hard for large mechs to maneuver in and friendly fire really hurts bad now. In the last patch if you ahd someone from your own team hit you by accident there was barely anything. Now you take serious armor damage from it now. I had a couple of teammates in a few matches that had itchy trigger fingers and I really fealt it. We as team have too be very careful. A command capability was supposdily added.
New map is pretty hot, still enough open area for lrms to be useable. Nobody uses the command capability. A lot of info on map means it's hard to really read whats going on now. Salvage works good (undestroyed enemy mech parts are salvaged, then split up between winning team). Kill assists work now so LRM's get some xp, so does spotting. 25 xp for lrms locking onto your target, kill assist is 150 xp divided up between mechs that damaged the dead mech. XP split is based on damage done, not an even split. Some other minor changes in maps.
Also basic matchmaking is working! No more 8 atlases vs 8 centurions! Each team should have an equal number of assaults, heavies, mediums, and lights. I noticed that about 25% of games end up 8v7 now though because the system can't find the right mech class before the timer runs out.
nice! havent been on in about a week (on vacation - camping etc.) hopefully I'll get on and check this patch out in the next couple of days (although going camping again this weekend).
check out what my son picked up for me :) We've been big into board games all summer and this is the icing on the cake for me - bringing me back to my youth!

Thats awesome! Also I wont be around much for the next couple weeks. our laptop is in the repair shop and the wife needs a pc available for her work so I can't hog thione. So II wont be around much for a couple weeks.
Ben concentrating on Cats 1 LRMs, 1 SRMs and a K2.
CPLT-K2
2 Med Lasers
2 Large Lasers
Standard Engine 260
64.56 tons
402 armor
24 Heat Sinks
===================
CPLT-A1
2 LRM 15's
2 SRM 2's
AMS + 1 ton AMS Ammo
Standard Engine 220
65 tons
284 Armor
15 heat sinks
===================
my other mechs are
===================
JR7-F
4 Medium Lasers
XL300 Engine (138.9 kph zoom)
5 Jump Jets
14 heat sinks
34.87 tons
236 armor
=================
my new Hunchback - only played 2 or 3 matches with it so still tweaking
=================
HBK-4P
2 Medium Lasers
7 Small Lasers
AMS+1 ton AMS ammo
XL310 engine (100.4 kph)
25 heat sinks
50 tons
240 armor
===============
I'm surprised this isn't 2x Gauss Rifles...thought that was all the rage. :)
CPLT-K2
2 Med Lasers
2 PPCs
AMS with 2 tons ammo
416 armor
24Heat Sinks
and the only way you can do all that: 280 XL engine
I figure with no repair costs right now why not use the expensive stuff
BTW you can add more armor. Unless your armor is at 422 your tonnage should be at 65
Did a little more tuning the atlas...
2 large pulse lasers
2med pulse lazer
ams
45 heatsinks
200 engine
I may be able to overheat on caustic but not sure yet....
Atlas (Founders-D)
4 M Pulse Lasers
1 Gauss
AMS
~510 armor
300 Engine (will upgrade to a 360 XL)
I have had excellent luck with this combo. So far...
I have an Atlas K w/ 2 x AMS and 2 ER PPC...but I haven't got it tweaked right yet.
My next might be an Atlas D-DC SRM boat.

If anyone gets a chance to download the patch fairly early today let us know what's been implimented.
