The Taken King
I thought we could use a specific topic to discuss the expansion.
Someone sent me a link to a trove of info from Gameinformer on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/3frkbk/game_informer_ttk_info_dump_megathread/
Summary of the Game Informer news (Credit - /u/Mawnix):- Level cap raised to 40
- Cryptarch rewards from engrams are now more in line with the type of Engram you got
- The second half of the Taken King apparently starts once you reach the Endgame (Questlines throughout the Destiny Universe!)
- Your Ghost can now scan objects to offer more insight into the world's lore (IE, scan a Cabal soldier, gives you info on their Military Regiment)
- You can now turn in Bounties without returning to the Bounty Board!
- Intelligence, Discipline, and Strength now have numerical "tiers" that decide their influence on your character
- A new progress system where you sacrifice an existing piece of gear that belongs to the same slot (? Kind of confused about this and this is literally how it's read)
- The Tower and its NPCs have been retooled to offer quests/story/insight into the world as you level up your character from 1-40 (!!!! Cryptarch, Gunsmith, etc questlines!!!!)
- Entire base game/expansions retooled for narrative and access purposes to make much more sense (Example: after meeting the Queen for the first time, the Reef is open to you)
- Subclasses, old and new, have their own questlines (?)
- GUNSMITH NOW HAS A REP AND THE HIGHER YOUR REP, THE MORE "PROTOTYPE WEAPONS" HE OFFERS FOR YOU TO "TEST IN THE FIELD" FOR REP. Reaching a certain Rep with Banshee allows you access to "Armsday", a weekly purchase that allows you to ORDER LEGENDARY GUNS with GLIMMER.
- Crucible and Vanguard Marks are gone! ALL HAIL THE UNIVERSAL "LEGENDARY MARKS" FOR LEGENDARY VENDOR PURCHASES!
- Class specific materials needed for upgrading are gone! Hadronic Essences, Armor Plating, etc. have been replaced by "Armor Materials", making it easier to utilize materials on one character towards another to progress them.
- NO LONGER FORCED TO WEAR A CLASS ITEM WHEN LEVELLING UP NEW MONARCHY, DEAD ORBIT, OR FWC (you pledge to each faction!)
- You can turn in materials to these above factions for a Rep Gain (like the Speaker with Glimmer)
- NEW SYSTEM THAT RECORDS ALL SHADERS AND, ONCE YOU'VE GAINED IT, YOU'RE ABLE TO CHOOSE FROM THEM ANYTIME YOU VISIT THE SYSTEM (also shows you the Shaders you don't have AND HOW TO OBTAIN THEM!)
- Same above system with Emblems!
- New Exotics are tied into Questlines!
- RAIL GUN FUSION RIFLE HEAVY WEAPON EXOTIC HNNNNNG YE SON YOU READ THAT RIGHT.
- Eight new Crucible Maps
- Weekly Crucible and Trials bounties! Complete all 5 of the Weeklies for the week, and you gain access to a 6th that has a chance to reward you either a Legendary or Exotic!
- ENDGAME THAT EXPLORES PREVIOUS ENDGAME (Vault of Glass) AND FURTHERS TO STORY EVEN AFTER FINISHING THE STORY MISSIONS
- Bosses/mechanics that aren't purely Bullet Sponge-y!
- Crucible has a "mercy rule"
Discuss.
I don't see anything but good change in that.
I caution anyone from deleting an existing character until we hear more. Currently, things like Ghosts and Golden chests are lost for the character that found them.
Now THIS is an update. If all of this comes out on the launch of TTK, we'll have basically a brand new game!
Impressive. Most impressive.
According to Game Informer, all of your year-one legendary guns and gear will stay behind - non of it will be upgradable... Goodbye Fatebringer, Vision,.... every single one of them...
Destiny’s Year One Legendary Weapons Staying Behind In Year Two
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2015/08/04/destinys-year-one-...
You'll want more powerful weapons for new PvE, but your year one legendaries should still be usable in vanilla PVP (i.e. not in Iron Banner or Trials where level matters) and in VoG/Crota.
Waiting to see what Bungie's going to do about vault space. That could force some ugly choices on us.
I really don't care about having to give up my "year one" loot. Grinding for stuff is what keeps me playing. If I end up just using the same weapons and armor over and over again, that gets boring.
Sure it will be painful to dismantle some stuff, but if we get better stuff, then it won't be so bad. The game seems to be shaping up to allow us to actually run builds and this is what I wanted from Destiny since the beginning.
So do all characters start over at level 1, or 20? Either is fine with me honestly. Just curious.
Well, whether it becomes useless or not, I will probably never shard my Comedian. I just love the description.
And whether this is exactly on topic or not: I always thought that with Destiny's tagline "Become Legend" that they would eventually start releasing expansion guns/armor with names and/or flavor descriptions of real player characters based on game stats/events (first guys to complete VoG, the guardians they used to mention in weekly updates that had killed more of X type mob than anyone else, PVP gods, etc.) I just think it would be cool.
Of course, seeing "XXsAtaNs666milfXx's Scout Rifle" might break the immersion a little bit.
Everything coming with TTK is so good it's like getting a completely new original release game plus old Sony exclusives plus everything new in TTK.
It'll be the best $40 I've spent.
I'm pretty poor at sussing out how games will play from advance descriptions, but Bungie did so well holding my attention since I started playing (in March or so), my trust is theirs to lose. Expecting a lot of compelling gameplay!
Interview with Deej at Gamescon:

In short, he says they do have something in the works re storage space, so stay tuned.
Progression is tied you your activity - you'll start at whatever level you are now, you level up just by playing.
He confirmed that year 1 legendary weapons will still be useful, e.g. in normalized crucible, so don't dismantle anything yet. Didn't discuss exotic weapons or armor.
There will be class-specific new weapons and a player-initiated public event.
Sleeper Simulant - could this be the next Gjallarhorn?

Seems as though they really like TTK and all of the changes.

I am going to look 'so' good! If you make good choices, you might look almost as good.
DEEP, just remember to press A when you're looking to equip a piece of that new fancy FWC gear.
Did they say "Vaults" as in multiple vaults?
Nameplate Collections. Collections and Vaults Legendary Marks Shader Collections Exotic Weapon Blueprints Infusion Artifact Slot Armsday Level 25 Character Boost
Oh yeah! Watched the Twitch stream today. Mind blown.
The least interesting thing was a doubling of the Vault space and that is very exciting!
Cool new weapons and armour with cool new colours and perks.
Exotics in hand will work as they do now but are upgradeable to Year 2 specs.
Can't wait!
Cool stuff.
So - if I already have the first year and dont want to pay again for stuff I already have, what version do I buy? Is it digital only?
Quite the overhaul to the game and that was just touring the changes made in the tower. We are going to have SO much to do now!
Yeah. After watching the Bungie livestream today. Holy shit snacks. It will be a brand new game essentially. It sucks it took them this long to really get the game to where it needed to be. But at least its getting there. Can't wait to see the new content next stream. Im hoping there is a surprise reveal that we'll get a dog fight mission in space along-side the awoken queen. THAT would make me uber happy.
Yeah - I have to admit - I would love some space combat al la Halo Reach: Long Night of Solace. I hope its a bit more detailed, but still, it would be cool. It would make updating our ships mean something instead of basically changing our loading screen.
I also want Prince Uldren to suck vacuum.
So... should we spend our Vanguard marks and Crucible Marks on current legendary guns and gear, which can perhaps be traded (sacrificed) for new TTK stuff?
Right now, I think most of my characters are running with maxed Vanguard and Crucible marks (don't need anything from the vendors).
Yep. I'm holding all of my characters at max vanguard and crucible marks too. The rep bonuses will be nice.
I'm also holding all of my cryptarch and faction packages in the hopes they will decrypt into new TTK stuff with the new and improved loot stream.
I'd check that Twitch stream again. Some of the facts are getting muddy.
Still recovering from post-stream nerdgasm.
Luke Smith tweeted that "Only year 2 legendaries will dismantle into legendary marks. Year 1 legendaries shard into whatever they shard into right now.". So using up your marks now isn't going to get you much. I'm maxed but will hold onto them for the rep gain.
Haven't heard explicitly, but I wouldn't expect any year 1 packages to decrypt into new TTK stuff.
