Need input on a new PC Build
Need input on a new PC Build
I've had the same rig since 2012 and decided it was time for a either massive upgrade or a whole new rig since what I have won't run anything really current at max.
OLD & BUSTED SPEC:
------------------------------------
- AMD FX 6100 3.81ghz 6 core processor - 16gb Corsair Vengeance 1600 DDR3 RAM - Asus Sabretooth 990 FX - Geforce GTX 560 w/1 GB of DDR5 memory - 650 Watt power supply - 500GB Western Digital HDD - 2 TB Samsung HDD
It's been a good rig for me up until this point. Ran almost everything at max and works great with Photoshop and video editing in Sony Vegas. But now I'm using the rig less & less for design and video work, and more for gaming. But so many of the newer games don't run well, so it's time to bring on the new hotness.
But I hit a wall. Do I go with AMD or Intel? The AMD FX 9590 is not a new processor, but it's AMD's "best" CPU available, and it's nowhere near the level of say an i7, but I can do some 4K gaming with it when it's paired with the right graphics card(s). I don't think I need the latest & greatest by any means. But I'd like to have some room for future upgrades without having to buy a new motherboard & processor. After a couple of years.
If I go with an AMD CPU, then I can re-use my current motherboard at least. Which saves me a $175 and it will be an overall use PC, not just gaming. But if I go with an Intel rig, it would be pretty much a whole new system and used exclusively for gaming, and I'd keep my old rig for graphic design & web browsing only.
------------------------------------------------------------
NEW HOTNESS POTENTIALS:
AMD BUILD: $1475.27
------------------------------------
Here's the AMD Build I would go with. This is more of a rebuild/upgrade. Keep in mind I already have the Motherboard, so that would knock off around $174 off the build price. And I'd keep the 2TB hard drive as well instead of getting the 3TB drive.

INTEL BUILD: $1760
------------------------------------
And here is the Intel Build I would go with. This would be a complete from-scratch build. This is using their new Skylake family chip (since it's the latest line of chips). I also would like input on whether you guys & gals think I should go with dual GTX 970's or 1 GTX 980 Ti.

----------------------------------------------------------
I'm not planning on buying any 4K monitors anytime soon. So gonna stick with 1080p resolutions at 120hz for right now. Just want to run everything max/ultra settings.
Also.....if I go with an Intel setup, should I use 3 monitor setup? or could I use a 50" 120hz LCD TV? I'm leaning more towards the Intel Build since there's really only about a $300 difference, and this would let me keep my old rig for graphic design and web browsing stuff, leaving the new rig for just gaming & emulation.
I'm an intel snob, so would go that way
All I can say is that I just updated to a gtx 980 ti ( evga superclocked 6GB ) version and would go with this over SLI any day - why ?
More RAM and the gaming forums I browse, modern stuff just seems to hate SLI out of the gate. I don't know why.
Everything there looks solid. I also have the Samsung SSD, but save a few dollars if you can. I've had no problem with cheaper Kingston ones - though that price looks great. I'd get a cheap 240GB one as well, just for the OS and put my games on the Samsung :)
Enjoy the build.
I'll second the notion of single video card. Less headaches and hassles...and now you can get plenty of horsepower out of a single card. I'm running a single 760Ti (4G) to run triple 24s (5760x1080 total resolution), primarily in iRacing, rFactor (1 & 2), Guild Wars 2 & Borderlands 2. My CPU is my current bottle next. My current build is about 5 years old w/ the only updates being the video card and upping the RAM to 16GB. The old Intel Clarksdale 660 is still holding up...though I hope to build a new box come tax return.
Also a huge EVGA fan.
Thanks for the input gents. Not sure which route I'm gonna go vid card-wise. But I'm really leaning more to the single 980. I may even go nuts and go for a Titan X. It's about $1,000 extra....but hey...I wouldn't need another card for a few years. lol.
If you were looking for an upgrade in the monitor side, you could take a look at Dell's UltraSharp line. Upgrades resolutions if you were wanting to stay single monitor. I personally would shy away from a big screen tv as a monitor. Unless you're looking at a 4k tv, things won't look as nice since a 50" 1080p tv has the same resolution as a 24" 1920x1080 monitor.
So if you were weighing 1 50" tv vs. a triple 24" (or 27") monitor configuration...triples, hands down. I went to triple monitors originally for racing...but they are damn nice in other games too. The extra peripheral vision is an amazing feature to have, especially in GW2.
You might want to save some dollars on the Titan. Part of my decision was based on this

Bang for buck, the Titan doesn't really deliver compared to the 980 ti, and if you were happy to go really crazy on GPU price, wait a year or so until the new NVIDIA architecture comes out and all our cards will be redundant*
*in the way that the manufacturers would want us to believe .
